Game started off pretty poorly, an attempted crowd surf of Grant Valdred (annoying +ST blitzer) ended up with double skulls and an instant turnover, leaving my team rather out of position. Monk capitalized well on that but my blitzers didn't die from the ensuing fouls, which was nice. I got the ball free at one point, but didn't have enough players around to secure it following the bounces, and had wasted too much time for a counter-scoring effort.

With a draw or loss giving identical results in the standings, the second half was played much more aggressively, as I was a TD down and only a win would suffice. So, over aggression resulted in losing the ball and Monk getting his second TD, eventually changing the gameplan to just "injure stuff".

I did give Monk two MNGs, while only suffering BHs, but he was missing Tonkai and Balkoth so in the (likely) rematch he'll have even more players...

That double skull was the Troll who went Loner, and left a big hole in the line when he dropped. Looking back, it was probably the decisive play of the game as it informed the rest of the half, which in turn led to the aggressive second half. The only way it could have gone worse for Kanil would have been if the gang fouls had done more than stun the blitzers but even with them still on the pitch they had a hell of a time playing defense against all the Guard I had upfield. Things just turned into a muddle featuring Grant Valdred the league CAS leader competing with Reave the league Kills leader to remove the opposition faster; while he did get the ball free, it never really got anywhere he could secure it, especially with the pair of AG4 players I had available to scoop it up.

I'm hoping I can survive a rematch with my full strength highly bloated roster. This game was refreshing just for seeing what the team looks like "lean and mean," with the TV spread out more equitably across my players. Tonkai and Balkoth are both huge TV sinks, and when I'm honest with myself they aren't worth the pay. If I was heartless and obsessed with winning, they'd both go, since together they are 450k TV, enough for Kanil to get a HMC as well as a Wizard ON TOP OF what he could afford this game. They're good, but I don't know as they're that good.

But gosh darn it, they're so much fun!

Or... y'know... Morg 'n' Thorg. ;)

I don't really think a block big guy is much bloat at 210, but Tonkai really doesn't know what he wants to be. He's a thrower, an interceptor (but without catch), a ball carrier (without dodge), a blitzer (without tackle)... guy does a lot of things, but does none of them really well -- except throwing, but 240 TV is a lot for good throwing. There's certainly something to be said for a jack-of-all-trades player, particularly on the jack-of-all-trades human team... but he's definitely far from ideal. I'm wouldn't fire him, but I wouldn't cry much if he died.

Although I suspect the wrong player becoming a stat freak is a pretty common problem.

I find him to be like a beloved family member myself. As long as he's doing well enough in games that he's a fit for the team I'd keep him.

Well, what I like most about AG 5 is the "pick up the ball wherever it is and get away" aspect, a skill which is always useful and handy for bailing me out of my own poor decisions. But yeah, the jack of all trades aspect basically makes him the ultimate Hail Mary; he can do whatever the situation requires, but he doesn't do it as effectively as a specialist would. If I'm playing well, it's usually juuust enough for me to eke out a W.

Actually, I think that's what makes me like him so much. He's the entire team personified in one player, which gives him a lot of character and in turn makes the team quite memorable. The team can compete in any aspect of the game, but it's not so good that it can survive sloppy play from me, even for one turn. I'm never gonna have another Human team quite like this one.

Dammit, I'm getting too attached to my pixels again. It's a good thing the Meanies are named after the worst people I could make myself learn about.

Jartol and I have had conflicting schedules all week, I'm afraid. I'm not sure when Kanil normally does the rollover; we *might* be able to fit something in tonight, but we haven't discussed it.

Monk's Meanies 4 - 0 Slaya's Scrabblers

THE_SLAYA played a double header, which was unfortunate for him as he didn't have luck left over for this game. Most of the game was controlled by the Guard Meanies in the middle of the pitch supported by all the Blodge of the rest of the team on the fringes. The Meanies did a good job of containing the Tackle Stormvermin, and the few times they got tackles in I was lucky enough to avoid the breaking of armor. The Scrabblers had a few opportunities to score, but 4 (5?) failed passes killed each one. SLAYA did trick me into taking a shot at the Sidestepper in the endzone, wasting a blitz, and he played well with the dice he had, but overall nothing much went right for him.

George "Mad Bomber" Metesky the Assassin made his debut for the Meanies, and scored a TD and made a few successful but non-incapacitating stabs, as well as a couple blocks when I needed a push out of him and got DD. Overall, a good match for the Meanies who come out of it healthy and advance to the Training Tournament Finals in a ten week season where they didn't notch a W until week 7. Even if they don't come out with the trophy, I'm feeling much better about their competitiveness in the main league when they make the jump next season. If only I'd earned more winnings on that match...

A multitude of things.

Advancement is usually at my (EST) midnight. If a player in a timezone behind EST has an unplayed game, I will delay advancement however. If you schedule on your monday, you should get to play.

Both leagues have finished up their games and have been advanced. THE_SLAYA and i2amroy were tied at the end of the regular season, tie break sees i2amroy ranked higher, due to him winning one game and drawing the other in their head-to-head series.

Main League Semi-Finals
ank - w00t w00t vs ndkid - Morg's Meat Mashers
monk12 - Monk's Marauders vs Kanil - Skitterscamps

Training Tournament Finals
monk12 - Monk's Meanies vs Kanil - Players are Overrated

As you can see, Charmander and I played, and I won. It was a pretty unremarkable game, as I got all the casualties and Charmander got all the skulls. Despite his best efforts, you really can't win when the dice conspire against you.

Lastly, next season seems it will be without a race limitation, with the existing one week deadline, and the TT will be new teams only again -- all these are still up for debate, so if you haven't expressed your opinion, feel free to do so.

Semifinal Round:

Monk's Marauders 3 - 0 Skitterscamps

Skitterscamps brought Morg into the match with their Inducements, as well as a Bloodweiser Babe who wasn't helpful until after the game was well and truly decided. Skitterscamps won the toss and elected to receive, but all the first half plans went awry on a turn one Pitch Invasion. The Marauders caught the worst of it, though Skitterscamps had their casualties as well, but the Underworld was able to surround and foul Grant Valdred the ST4 Frenzy Blitzer, Badly Hurting him and preventing Valdred vs Reave round II. The goblin who threw the foul was ejected from the game (a worthy trade indeed,) and the Humans got their act together enough to blitz the ballcarrier, bring the few standing Marauders around the ball, and secure it with Eomund Tonkai. The speedy Skaven came back to the ball, nipping at the heels of the Marauders, but the Troll and Morg failed to bash their way into the crude cage. The next turn let the rest of the Marauders recover from the Pitch Invasion and come back to help, forming a truly impressive muddle in the middle of the field. Skitterscamp efforts to chain push were stymied (twice!) by Marauders with Stand Firm, preventing a solid hit on Tonkai. Tonkai dodged free and ran to the other side of the pitch, and the next few turns were a stall as the Guardian Blitzers screened off Tonkai. A Riot ran the clock an extra turn, preventing any hope of a Skitterscamp TD that half, but they did get a CAS and a KO in the remaining time.

Skitterscamps kicked off to start the second half, them with a largely goblin team but the humans with something like 9 or 10 players fit to play. The kick went deep, coming to a rest in the Marauder endzone, which Tonaki went to pick up while much of the rest of the team pushed into Underworld territory. Morg attempted to deliver a game changing play as he hurled a goblin deep down the pitch, but the poor fellow failed to stick the landing, preventing him from even attempting to surf Tonkai out of his own endzone. Skitterscamps tried to cover all the Marauder options, succeeding in knocking over Omo Thunderjaw, he of the Nerves of Steel, but the next turn the Marauders still managed to do the dodging, passing, and handing off necessary to move the ball from one endzone to the other, putting them up 2-0.

I honestly don't really remember how that last drive went down. Skitterscamps was down 2-0 with about 6 turns to play, and while the Marauders were down to 8 men on the pitch it was still a long shot to send the game to OT. Kanil's last, best chance to score was foiled when he forgot that TTM counted as his pass action for the turn, preventing a long scoring chain. He tried to adapt as best as he could, but the ball was popped loose and in an odd twist Omo Thunderjaw the Catcher threw the ball downfield to Eomund Tonkai the Thrower, who caught it and eventually ran in the last score.

Other events of note include two Cyanide bugs (one instance where Guard imposed a negative assist on a gang foul, which is wrong, and one instance where the Pass Block skill marked a square as valid for an interception attempt when it was not,) but neither really mattered since the dice involved would have been fails anyway. The refs were quite active in the first half, ejecting 3 players for fouling, and would have ejected another in the second half if it hadn't been for a Get the Ref event. And while the Humans got their KOs back almost immediately, Skitterscamps had two Skaven on the pine until after the Marauders had an insurmountable lead. At the end of the day, Kanil didn't play well enough to make up for his roster's shortcomings (the pivotal moments in the game both being the result of Kanil's inattentiveness,) while I managed to avoid making any serious errors in judgement that would have given Kanil the momentum back.

The Marauders come out of the game fairly healthy, their only loss being Jal Drunkenstumbles the gimpy Dirty Player who died as he lived, on the business end of a boot. The Marauders may not have finished with the #1 seed, but the winner of ank vs ndkid will have to face a peaking squad eager to win their last, most important game. Y'know, assuming no future Tournament of Champions arises.

Monk pretty much summed up the game, there. He played well, and I did not, and he got a deserved win and a trip to the finals.

First turn was so beautiful, then everything went downhill from there...

Kinda frustrating for the Scamps to go 1-0-4 against the Marauders, with only two touchdowns to show for their efforts -- I really think the matchup wasn't as bad as the results show... but I won't get another shot at the humans until the Scamps win a season and take on the champions tournament. ;)

Also, while I'm here, Monk and I will be playing our TT final tomorrow at 1 PM EST. Dunno if anyone wants to watch, but if you do, then that's when it's going down!

Oh hey, I should mention, Kanil and I played the Training Tournament Final, and victory went to Monk's Meanies in a match where I entered intending to execute an odd sort of 2-1 grind, and things went pretty much to plan! A tough match that was in question right up until the Wardancers took themselves off the field on back-to-back failed leaps (or near enough.)

While the Meanies get ready to take the Marauders' slot in the Main League, I've decided to take the Ogre Challenge for next season's TT. After a great deal of hemming and hawing, I went for 4 Ogres lead by Richard Feynman (and his Nobel prize in Physics) screened by Peace-Prize-winning snotlings led by Theodore Roosevelt (whose bravery will no doubt lead to an early grave.) Hopefully I can manage a draw or two!
