my computer managed to crash and I didn't save, so I had to start the fort from scratch...

Im farther than I got when it crashed so its all good, although I did find out that I have no metal whatsoever, so I have to rely on making crossbows... with wood from the desert... it just keeps on getting better. I think I might start a giant underground tree farm. I can even pasture my livestock there... talking about livestock, two of my water buffaloes managed to starve to death with plenty of grass near them... wtf? They are pastured correctly and everything, ah well who knows.

I still need to double dig the trenches, which will ensure enemies cant shoot through my fortifications, best to be safe than sorry...

The good news is that I got about 10-15 dwarves in a migrant wave, so I set them to work making blocks in my 6 stone mason workshops. They also got started on the fortifications... I might have to draft a bunch of them to be crossbowdwarves so I can defend the fort once goblins decide that opening up trade routes to a whole new continent is a bad thing in the grand scheme of thing of things...

well enough talk, here is a pic

edit: I decided to butcher the rest of the water buffaloes since it is evident that they are going to starve too, might as well get some meat off them... so much for those 202 embark points >_>

the place is a scorching hot desert so my dwarves are drinking every other second... its annoying

I have a great farm going so its all good

Water buffaloes are barely able to avoid starvation under ideal conditions.  You're better off butchering them all, and then getting sheep or alpacas or something.

kk, Ill keep that in mind

I hope reindeer can survive in the desert, because thats what I asked the liaison for XD

- - - - -

Ok so a snail-man wandered into my fort and is causing general havok, I sent my army to take care of it, probably not a good idea since they have no weapons... anyways they have been trying to wrestle it with no success

- - - - -

so apparently there were two of them and my army managed to bite both of them to death. . .

I bet they are going to be tasting mucus for weeks

- - - - -

totally not a vampire

- - - - -

oh yeah and forgot to mention that I got a migrant wave of about 20 or so

- - - - -

I breached the caverns, but no foliage or anything, no giant mushrooms or cave moss D:

Did I miss a cave?

- - - - -

I found metal... too bad its cobaltite

Oh wow, I've heard of those kind of caves but I've never run into them myself.  You got a cave that lacks any form of water, no lake, stream or even a puddle.  When a cave has no water then no mud and no plants.

Ok huge update before I sleep

I built started on the first part of the bridge, Im running out of mica x.x
I finished all of my fortifications, not that it helps much since my archers havent been training, as usual. It hit me hard since some goblins came around and due to my lack of armor and my archers running around using their crossbows as hammers, it ended up a bit messy... I might just try to get a massive amount of war dogs. I told my leatherworker to make a ton of stuff for the military, but it doesnt help that he makes 4 things then gets a drink of booze.

Talking about booze I've got... lets see a normal barrel is 55 gallons... so Ive got 37,455 gallons of alcohol for my dwarves to drink up ranging from longland grass ale to cave wheat beer.

A goblin thief made off with a child, how he stayed undetected I have no friggin clue since we have people running in and out installing bridge parts constantly. My military is completely crippled, only 2 people died once but my legendary (idiotic) marksdwarf has infections all over the damn place. He decided it was a good idea to take the role of a hammerman with a cedar crossbow. Oh yeah and my militia captain decided he likes that ELVEN MADE WOODEN SWORD... I feel like sticking him in the vampire spike trap...

Talking of vampires, I stuck a vampire in a 1x1 room with a burrow behind a forbidden door, and he somehow escaped and decided to murder my legendary chef... yeah, they always seem to go for the good ones... (hmmm chef, he must taste good)

Anyway long story short I was pretty po-ed, so I stuck the vampire in a room with 2 spikes and wooden speak weapons (f-in elves again) and had someone pull the lever until it died. Being a vampire, it took a while to die, its whole body was red until it finally gave in...

I started a reindeer farm... in the desert...
Its turning out quite well so far... too bad they can't be war reindeer...
Hey! I would breed penguins if I could!

oh yeah, I hit a cave which contained no moss or anything... oh yeah and it had a passage to the next cave... which contained no trees or moss or water... fun

I dug out the hall of legends (think memorial slabs) + the graveyard. Ive been keeping the graveyard  locked down in case of necromancers...

I decided to look at a huge overview of the map...

If I use spoilers, you know its bad...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

yeah... this is gonna take a while...

if you guys have any cool ideas, feel free to say something, I think Im going to be playing this fort for a while

you should totally build a whaling station coming off your bridge when you hit the halfway point

other than that i am mightily impressed and definitely want to see the final product

I recommend draining the ocean, and constructing a long net (cage traps on floors placed above one another), as to catch every single creature that passes through. The cages would be collected by making the net isolated by a long row of floodgates/bridges on both sides.

Complete with self-destruct lever of course. Think along the lines of atlantis. Hell, you could make the whole thing out of green glass if you wanted since you sure have enough sand. Actually... you could technically make a structure of infinite size if you used green glass...

Build your sea-spanning bridge with MAGMA. It's dwarfier.

This, except the cave-in spam.

Also, does this trick to bridge regions work for mountains too?

And...

If I set up a perpetual motion magma world flooder and set it running and then abandon, what would I see if I tried to go back 5 or 6 years later in adventure mode?

Ok so new things on the to-do list are

- create a mid-ocean dwarven utopia
- make a platform for cavetrap fishing

I decided that having my only source of water about a mile away was a bad thing, so I started making a water desalination system.

I also decided that since the last goblin encounter, I needed more defense, so I started to build a customs area where I can check if dwarves are vampires. I got three out of my last migrant wave, and they are refusing to go into their burrows...

Well as you can see, it isn't nearly as done as I would have liked when that goblin siege came...
See those dead dwarves, they are either peasants or crossbow-hammer berserker recruits >_>

I currently have 1 dwarf who is actually shooting them, although it seems they can come in any time they want since the bridge decided it didnt want to become a wall while it is raised or whatever reason, I might have a dwarf start constantly pulling its lever, so it becomes an atom smasher

I bridged the entrance with a cobalt wall for safety reasons, not that it helped since my dwarves got jumped building the water desalinator. I really wasn't expecting a siege a few months after the ambush party. Anyway, I found out what to do with that strip of land.

Ill post up what my fort looks like after this madness is all over

- - - - -

This dwarf managed to ninja his way past the goblins and into the fort

- - - - -

- - - - -

well shit, all of my recruits poured out like water from INSIDE MY FORT to chase this one grasshopper man that was passing by outside, and the goblins killed ALL OF THEM
