So. I got an older version of the game for kicks.
« on: March 01, 2012, 05:10:42 am »

I'm taking all suggestion on what I should do. I wanted to try and see if I could save Syrupleaf (a travesty, I know) during it's death throws but Megaupload was given the big "Fuck You" by the US government, rendering that plan impossible.

Come on denizens of Bay 12! What shall I do first on this older-than-dirt version of 40d?

...Maybe see if you can get the game to run at at least a quarter of a snail's pace, for starters? I dunno why but 40d never worked for me when I tried this. :( Pretty sad, since there was such interesting madness in that version.

Where can you get older versions?

It's treated as completely normal because this is Dwarf Fortress.  There's absolutely nothing wrong with surrounding yourself with a wall of flames, only to later realize that you're surrounded by a wall of flames.
There's nothing that can't be solved by hurling fifteen roc birds at it.

Build a fort in a bottomless pit.

This.  Also, magma is hard to come by.

Yes, and then get bored as hell when your squad of 9 champion legendary wrestlers can dismantle an 80 man goblin seige while taking no injury at all. Unless their commander is sleeping of course. Then they'll just wait for him passively while the fort is slaughtered around them.

I loved 40d, but I prefer the modern military interface since it gives me a much finer degree of control over what my dwarves can equip, their training schedule & even let me assign them specific targets.

I personally never played 40d with its less powerfull interface, but I have read a bit about it. I still agree with you. *equips military with pickaxes*  :P

A fort full of military dwarves with maces could easily repel the largest of onslaughts. Set up some random windows too, watch them punt goblins through the glass.

These above suiggestion are made of win. I wonder which I'll do first.... The concept of my dwarves actually winning a fight for once is very tempting.
