I'd rather not get involved with these folks. I've heard some unsavory things about the more... misogynistic elements of the redditor collective, and I want no part of that.

There's a light side for every dark!

Besides 13.3% of site users are female.

Haha what does that mean? We need more girls playing DF? :p

Anything that brings positive attention to something like this, is worthy. My intent is not to pressure people to join reddit or anything...nono.

13.3% of Redditors are female according to a poll they took in one sub-reddit.  The point is Misogyny is not a serious problem.

I find it funny that until now, no one (including myself) stopped to consider the absurdity of a submarine in which the crew cabin is filled with water and the crew is drowning when everything is working properly.

Actually Misogyny, racism, and pretty much every other human ill is seething on Reddit in full force.  That doesn't mean Reddit is incapable of being useful to some degree, but let's not kid ourselves.  Reddit is home to KKK subreddits, MRA subreddits, etc.  Saying that it's not a serious problem on Reddit because of a 13% female userbase is like saying misogyny is not a serious problem in the real world despite a ~50% female userbase.

Edit:  Though I wonder what metric you're using to constitute a 'serious problem'?

It's not a serious problem because it's an environment in which females can survive.

After 500+ views on this thread, as well as the efforts brought forth through other mediums, Dwarf Fortress is 85 entries away from #2nd place!!

Great job everyone!!

It's not a serious problem because it's an environment in which females can survive.

Hahahah, that's some serious bad faith argument.  You can apply that logic to literally anything and decide it's not an issue worthy of addressing.  You're basically saying that it's acceptable for people to be openly racist and misogynist because, well, 'they can handle it'.  I don't want to derail the thread, but defending that stuff at all is pretty awful.  Consider that Reddit, due to Something Awful putting pressure on them, recently shut down their pedophilia subreddits- and then a handful of "it's not pedophilia we just like trading pics of kids! wink" subreddits sprang up.

I mean, it's pretty well known that the overwhelming woman-hate Reddit projects isn't even confined to specific zones- they leak into things you'd expect to be fairly progressive or at least decent.

So yeah, if your argument is "the misogyny isn't too bad because there's still women around to hate (in a forum with 13 million or so users)", I really can't take you seriously.

Since apparently it wasn't obvious, that statement was not intended to be taken seriously. It was an intentional parody of the sort of bullshit logic that people sometimes used. I thought it was clear enough, but I guess maybe next time I should post in all caps and end in HERP DERP so that the message isn't confused with a serious opinion.

That said, the link you post looks a lot like a case of somebody not understanding jokes and getting mad about pointless shit. Sure, there's sexism going on but the way that woman is talking about it makes her really hard to take seriously.
Consider that Reddit, due to Something Awful putting pressure on them, recently shut down their pedophilia subreddits
Now that's just fucked up. What business is it of SA's?

Pressure as in openly mocking how horrible Reddit is and contacting the admins.   And what do you mean "what business of it is SA's?"  Are you going to say that they shouldn't have acted to get the child pornography removed and officially disapproved of?

Edit:  As for "i was being sarcastic", when you're going to jokingly take stances that close to the ones actual people have, you can't really act indignant when Poe's Law comes into effect.  Especially when I was asking someone a specific question concerning why they don't see it as a problem, meaning someone in the thread actually does seem to hold a similar stance.

Was there actual child pornography? If that's the case then the issue should have been dealt with by the appropriate law enforcement groups, in which case SA would have been justified in alerting relevant authorities. Contacting the admins is pretty reasonable if they didn't know what was going on, and openly mocking how horrible Reddit is is pretty much the assumed default case (does anyone not mock Reddit?) but that doesn't mean that SA has or should have any authority over other sites. If there wasn't anything actually illegal going on, just pedophiles talking or whatever, then SA should get off their high horse about it.

Fair enough.

Yeah, the article I linked has all of the details.  You'd do well to read it, if you're going to try to castigate SA for being high minded encyclopedia snobs sticking their noses where they don't belong, or whatever.  I mean, you're getting close to actually defending real life pedophiles.  Your claim of SA presuming authority, you're trying to cast them in a negative, authoritarian light for gathering evidence of child pornography being traded on Reddit and getting those people banned and those sections shut down.  That's about as democratized and even-handed they could be, in that sort of situation.

And, I didn't want to mention it before but at the urging of my friend I'll say it: you're really blaming the victim with regards to the atheist girl on reddit above.   You're making the claim that she deserves to be the target of misogyny because she 'can't take a joke', when the joke is misogynistic itself.  You're literally blaming her for the reprehensible actions of others.

I don't know if you're trying to be contrarian or whatever, but you should really recognize that when someone does something awful like racism or misogyny or child pornography, it's their own fault, and not anyone else's.

I define a not serious problem as not the opinion of the majority of users.

Then why did you initially represent it otherwise? Also it looks like Reddit were legally in the clear and made a business decision. SA pressure doubtless factored into it, but based on that article it seems like their decision was mostly because they'd had problems for years.

Nah. I acknowledged that the jokes are misogynistic and I also acknowledge that the actions are reprehensible if you feel that tolerance is an absolute virtue. The fact that she's getting mad about jokes is fairly independent of that. She's at fault only inasmuch as that her experience is caused by her going there.

I define a not serious problem as not the opinion of the majority of users.

That line of thought is actually one of the worst aspects of pure democracy.

Edit:  I'll let Cruxador have the last word, so as to not derail this further, unless this thread gets moved elsewhere.

It's a bit different with a website though, since you can just not go there. There may be Afrikaners in South Africa who wish they could split off and form a state where races are equal, but they can't, because nations don't work that way. The same is never true on the internet.
