For fun I have one individual using a bow I purchased from the elves... I bought him plenty of wooden arrows, but how can I provide him metal arrows?   I don't think it's possible, yet wanted to ask for confirmation.   It would be very sad if the crossbow is really the only realistic option for archer types.

you can't make it, thoguht you can buy it from other people like humans if you have there caravan (or steal it)

Humies will bring metal arrows.

Human caravans, goblin archers. DonŽt bet too much on them, youŽll get enough arrows to supply some few archers but not a big squad.

Next time you gen a world, if you want variety, dump this into the dwarf entity:

[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_BLOWGUN]
   [AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_BLOWDARTS]
[WEAPON:ITEM_WEAPON_BOW]
   [AMMO:ITEM_AMMO_ARROWS]

Good news... the humans arrived with 3 sets of copper arrows(25) and 3 sets of silver arrows(25).  All the melee weapons they offer are such poor quality they're not even worth spitting on.
