I am considering a dfterm terminal server
« on: March 09, 2012, 12:42:43 pm »

This has been something I have considered doing for several months now. About 6 months or so ago I splurged on a new midlife upgrade, and bought myself a high end i7 motherboard with all the fixins to replace the antiquated athlon xp I was using previously.  However, I have since noticed that I rarely use it for anything, and have just been letting it run the folding@home daemon on "large" all the time to make myself feel better about the expense.

I would retire f@h and replace it with dfterm, if I had some firm takers on putting it to use. (I don't want to invest the time creating a dfterm user account, and configuring the box to launch dfterm with it if I won't have any players.)

It's a 3ghz 8 core i7, with 2gb ram (will increase later), and a high end nvidia pci express video in a 16x slot. I have dsl, but terminal clients don't normally saturate the pipe.

If I can get a list of takers, I will make it happen.

Can do.

While looking into it, it seems my ubuntu box ate its python package, and apt-get doesn't know what to do. This will likely require a reinstall of the box to get it fixed right.

The broken python keeps package managers from grabbing cmake, which I need to build dfterm.

I'll fix it this weekend.

I'd use it, hopefully I can learn some engineering. I can easily set up living areas and depending on the embark steel production (basic stuff for almost everyone here I know) and I defend from basic attacks (big fan of long falls into steel spike pits).

What is dfterm?

It's a dedicated server for DF, allowing a remote host to connect and play over a simple terminal emulator.

It has primitive support for chatting and multiuser control over a single fortress.

Its good for people that have fritolay instead of intel in their PC, and for people who want to have a community game.

Basically multiplayer DF over...  Well, I've found this analogy works best:
Imagine you have a computer running DF.  Imagine this computer has 20 keyboards and 20 monitors, each in a different room.  Each shows the current state and each can move the cursor.  THAT is DFTerm in a nutshell.  Except Internet.

Quite right.

Since I have 2 takers, I will cook it up this weekend. Getting ubuntu on that box and happy on the internet takes some juggling because it needs b43 and fwcutter. (If you don't know, don't ask.)

Suffice it to say, I am downloading a fresh install iso, and backing some things up right now.

I would rather fix the borked python package, but apt-get insists there is nothing it can do, and python has deep tentacle connections in the os.

It should be ready by Sunday.

Nice, but you only have one cursor?
I can see this becoming popular in the future tough.
Remember, everything starts out small.

Yep, gotta share control.  Works best when you're able to boot people off the server who are being dicks, but when it's done I've actually seen people be very polite about sharing control.  After all, you came in knowing that you're sharing.  If you want to hog, play on your own!

It allows several "slots" for fortresses, if I am reading the devlog correctly.

Girlinhat:

In your esteemed opinion, should I also offer generic http+ftp access to the dwarf fortress folders? It opens the game up to vandalism, but it also let's users tweak the raw files/download the world for local play.

Why not fold on 7 cores and DF on the 8th? I can only see RAM being the bottleneck.

F@h eats cache like sweet sweet candy.

Multicore cpus share a single instruction cache. Cache misses seriously degrade performance.

I would say "yes" to allow access.  One issue with Carnes (and other) servers was that we had a hard time handling files.  Things got bloated with autosave, no one could tweak things like worldgen easily, and many raw changes were left unchanged!  Only issue might be the need to have a "quick backup" button that would restore the raws and inits to vanilla standard.

Sounds like a plan.  Apache and an ftp daemon it is.

Any suggestions on an ftp daemon?
