Make a borrow in the area you want your dwarves to take cover, make an military alert called "take cover" or something, then assign the borrow to the alert. i know it looks scary and confusing but after a while you get it.

Check the wiki if your confused.

Thanks, now the cage traps and my Hercules esque axedwarf will finish them.
