Water desalination
« on: March 11, 2012, 11:53:46 am »

Okay, I just set up a successful screw pump, and a well to desalinate salt water and it didn't work. I swear that is what is supposed to work. What am I doing wrong?

Did you construct a floor and wall for the reservoir to hold the well? If the water touches any part of the land, it becomes salty again.

I didn't construct a floor, but now I am getting conflicting signals. I guess I can drain it and try again with a floor. We'll see.

You're going to have to build the cistern somewhere else entirely, a tile that becomes salty is forever contaminated and salty. Even if you put constructed floors down. Obsidianization should clean things up though.

Saltiness is stored by location.  If a tile has every held salty water, then any water in that tile will be salty.  You need to create a cistern in a location which has never had salt in it.  Salt also is conducted between tiles of water instantly, so if your cistern water ever touches salty ocean water, the entire cistern will become salty.

Contrary to common myth, the cistern does not need to be lined with constructed walls and floors - natural stone or even sand walls and floor will be fine.  You do however want to make sure that the cistern is not in the path of ocean waves, since they can sometimes deposit salt on bodies of water inland.

Which is a problem with Aquifers if you have one as you wont be able to take surface water that is clean, below the level of the aquifer (amusing its salty too) as it has to pass through a tile that once held salt water.  Might be able to find cavern water though.

Yes, if you have a salty aquifer on your site, you may need to make your cistern completely above-ground to make sure none of it occupies a salty tile.

You could try making a water-purification plant with a windmill-powered screw pump, and just have your dwarves haul the water to where you want it with buckets.

The thing is, the cistern never touched salty water tiles, though it did not have constructed floors. However, it was above (not channels, there was ground between them) a pool of salt water from an earlier failed cistern.

The moat is three tiles wide everywhere, and it has ramps on the side, but it's from being water, I didn't put them there.

Well, whatever the cause, the desalination worked this time!

The moat is still not working and wagons will actually go right through it.

Does part of your moat consist of a natural brook?
