There are still, surprisingly enough, some severe issues with combat where, at least for certain material/tissue types, cumulative damage will never really fully destroy something.

In this example: A vampire giant sponge is nigh-unkillable because it doesn't have parts that can kill it by virtue of being destroyed/severed except for one giant body part, and since it can never be fully destroyed by repeated tearing, it can never die.

In a related example, if you set it (or a similar creature) on fire or even dump it in magma, it will never die, and will simply be on fire forever.

EDIT: Judging by tests I just did, regular giant sponges are indestructible as well, except they can also suffocate out of water.

Can you be a weresponge vampire?

Being a vampire stops you from being a were-creature, and vice versa :(

This thing must be captured and weaponized, for the good of dwarves everywhere.

I can SEE the pit now, stained with the blood of enemies.
It's a vampire giant sponge.  It cleans up after itself.  ;)

You'd have to make the sponge stop airdrowning and being an aquatic creature first ;p

Hmm. You could probably spawn one in DFHack by using mode to switch to arena mode, but I've never tested it. And I doubt you could switch back.
If it kills someone and gets named, it'll be a historical figure and might still be there if you reclaim, though

Are the vampire sponges vulnerable to high-tech particle physics experimentation? By which I mean dropping a bridge on them.

Hmmm....

An eternal source of fire.

Presumably this could be made use of for something...

Engraved on the floor is a well-designed image of a kobold and a carp.  The kobold is making a plaintive gesture.  The carp is laughing.
