Well it just so happens i pronounce it 'Urist'.

but seriously i always imagined it was Ur/uor-ist so more of a sound like the second half of your, followed by -ist

I suspect this gentleman is correct, and that of the two major variations, I suspect you fall into one or the other camps based on geography.  Perhaps by whether you are American or not.  I pronounce it "yer'ist," and am American, for the record.  In any case, it'd be interesting to find out.
