If someone wants to modify the nobles etc in a way that make Orcs into a playable race, I would be happy to include that in an update. I just wanted more challenging seiges, so little design work went into that area :)

I'll clean up all the bugs moment I get chance.

and it will work fine with any 34.##, no worries.

Are you planning on doing other plug-in races too?

Affirmative, A plugin beastmen race is en route, but I'm still trying to make them show up with the right equipment at the moment. my overall goal is to have 3 plugin 'difficulty' races that can be mixed/matched based on your tastes:

Orcs, for early game above ground threat. emphasize attack power.
Beastmen, for mid game threat above ground threat. emphasize surviveability.
Ratmen, for cavern threat. emphasize speed, swimming, and avoiding traps.

none of which are particularly overpowered, compared to eg. the fortress defense mod - I want them to be credible members of the dwarf fortress universe, not modded superbeasts - but all of which are considerably more dangerous that goblins.

That being said, most of the FD races fit with the DF universe. Great fiend spiders are evil GCSs, war elephants are steel-armed elephants, ferric elves are elves with iron, beak wolves are clever beak dogs...

My main point is, maybe you could add a low-power enemy that comes, starting right after embark. Something like some sort of wild animal, but eviler (kinda like dark stranglers and beak wolves from FD, but maybe less fantasy-ey). Something like a race of worgs (e.g. evil wolves)? They'd lack [INTELLIGENT] and [CAN_SPEAK], most likely, so they'd be a useful food source later on. Hm...maybe I should do a mod like that...

Feel free to use, change or appropriate these races however you like.

I am looking for decent graphics to use for the Beastmen, preferably in the same understated style as the orc graphics. any suggestions welcome  :)

Just started a new fortress and was caught off-guard by the suprising early arrival of sixteen beastmen, led by a maceman on a blind cave bear. out of twenty-one dwarves, twelve survived long enough to witness the tantrum spiral.

If you are looking for beastmen sprites, you can use mine, which are in the warhammer fantasy mod:

They don't look much like your orcs sprites style, but you can use them if you want.

Thanks MiguelMO, those look really nice, especially the crossbowman. With your permission I'll use those, but with a darker color palette:

I'm glad you like the sprites. You are free to modify them, of course.

sure thing! be careful, there are still a few minor errors in the orc raws.. 10 words on the language that aren't recognized and broken nobles for player controlled forts - Ideally take the creatures, graphics & language, and craft your own entity, if you want them to be controllable civ   :)
