And I've rigged an antenna that's turned out to be far, far more powerful than I had in mind. Working on connecting it now, then I'll do what'll hopefully be the final patch to the Lab umbilical.

Carefully hook up the antenna to the wire that I laid out here earlier. Accept the thermal camera offer only once I'm done, if Auron bugs me while I'm working, firmly shove him away. If he persists, whack him upside the head with that monkey wrench I still have on me.

However, we do have an antenna that could broadcast to the edge of known space, once I hook it up.

Before putting the goo sacks back in the vault, check to see whether or not I can identify the microorganisms responsible for maintaining and operating the membrane.

Check the drone footage to see if I caught what's making those black tower grooves on cam.

((Just 10 pages of posts left and I'll be giving you the updated notes, hopefully today or tommorow.
I'll probably have limited internet access during August, anybody want to take up the notes during that time? No need to maintain them on the level I do, just update the squads and maybe the sector info, so that Miyamoto can give some orders when he wakes.))

((EDIT: Hey, how is Vich talking to everyone if they're still in that electronics distortion field? And the base doesn't have an antenna installed yet?))

((I believe we came out of the field when I carried my teammates out of the storm. Besides, the blockage was hardly a complete one.

And about the antenna... First, I was able to speak to my teammates immediately after the BOOM, so I was doing it for a while. Changing it now would kind of mess up a lot of things. Like me knowing that everyone is alive.

And secondly, I believe that Piecewise has said something (right after the BOOM) along the lines of "Your current map is broken, so you can't get updates from Alvin. You will have to manually relay it from yourself to somebody in the base, and have them send it to you." You get the idea.))

Full description in the Useful links section, under the name "Bluerad Artifact" or something like that. A track/ditch was molten to the ground from sector 6 to the crater. The track was covered in Small Blueraditite shards.

   The moment a glass sample container touched the surface of the "lake" it reacted and began solidifying into the form of an octagonal glass/crystalline rod with a forest of spike legs. The process also absorbed the atmosphere there.
      -"The instant the container touches the surface of the lake the fluid reacts. A ripple explodes outward across the surface, spreading out in all directions. The surface of the lake crystallizes into glass and then then begins to move, random growths reaching up and then collapsing back down; solid glass moving like liquid. The movement only intensifies as time passes. The fluid shimmers back and forth between crystallized glass and orange liquid before hardening into the definite form of glass, the entire lake hardening over. The ground shakes as the solid glass begins to retract, pulling away from the shore and flowing back toward the center of the lake. There, in the center, something is forming. Something massive; like a giant crystalline rod, an octagonal spike growing toward the sky. As the fluid retracts it takes with it the atmosphere, a visible haze of condensing gas and heat forming over the lake's surface and flowing back toward the growing crystal spire. the crystal grows until it's easily several hundred meters all, sprouts a forest of twisted, rootlike legs and begins slowly walking away toward the east."
   The crystal made its way to the electrical fields, where it absorbed a lot of power. It began glowing blue, probably due to some sort of reaction.
      -Movement speed: about one subhex per turn
      -Unaffected by laser due to shield or absorption
      -"As soon as it enters the electric fields it starts absorbing electricity at a rather alarming rate; huge streams of current leaping from the ground into the creature's body. The crystal begins fading from white to a deepish blue. Its color continues to darken until it's a steely blue."
      -"The crystal remains motionless but seems to be absorbing less energy now. Perhaps it's hunger is being sated. It looks like it might be glowing a little bit. Or there's light radiating from somewhere inside it. There are readings of slightly raised electromagnetic radiation out toward the crystal thing."
   The crystal moved to the edge of the electrical fields and created a canyon with a high energy beam. The path of the beam was obstructed by the gravity seep in hex 1. It began moving inside the canyon and depositing orange goo similar to the one that created it.
      -"The crystal is moving again. It's hundreds of root like legs are tearing themselves free and again it's traveling slowly eastward."
      -"It appears to be deforming, changing shape slightly. A complex crystalline projection unfolds from it's "body", pointed vaguely northward. It begins spinning, pieces whirling around the central axis of the protrusion and light flows out from the center into the new structure."
      -"Flint sees part of it before his visor automatically shuts down to stop him from going blind. He sees the light gather at the end of the crystal's new limb, but he only catches the first instant of it firing. A beam of white yellow molten light, like the filaments of a solar flare, lashes out from the crystal and sweeps blindly forward across a half dozen zones. The beam half explodes, half melts a path- a white hot canyon- a quarter mile wide and 30 feet deep, straight out for over 50 miles. From their vantage point within the base, the only one who sees anything is Jack, still watching the monitors as the beam sweep over the gravity seep outside and distorts violently as the plasma is torn downward and the entire crater glows like a trapped star for a moment. The entire base seems to heave back and forth several feet as the team cowers down below in the core."
      -"It's on the move, heading northward, straight into the canyon it just dug for itself. It doesn't seem to be charging anything; it has absorbed it's "laser limb" and has stopped producing light. The crystal lowers it's bottom section into the still white hot canyon. It slowly begins crawling forward as it's bottom half cracks open and begins leaking a bright orange fluid that begins to fill the canyon. The fluid seems to be being released purposefully, the way it cracked open at the bottom seems deliberate; symmetrical and limited to just the bottom. It doesn't seem to be losing physical mass; it's staying the same size while continuing to produce the orange stuff."
   The crystal tried to protect the orange goo, but didn't give chase to the one taking the sample.
      -"You land next to the fluid and scoop up a container's worth. As you straighten up and attach the lid to the container you notice that the crystalline creature has pointed a single one of it's hundred legs at you. As you fly upwards, a bead of light the size of a billiard ball condenses on the crystal's outstretched limb. A thin stream of light the size of a pencil bursts forth and sweeps lazily across the canyon as you rocket straight up. You make it up and out of the canyon. Mostly. The crystal appears to have given up the pursuit"
   The crystal seemed to retaliate to anything happening around it with overwhelming laser force. It was unable to understand or retaliate to physics defying powers. Its shield seemed unable to protect it from them. The shield was however capable of blocking high energy attacks, with much strain however. It is assumed that starship grade weapons or nukes would be able to penetrate its shield and hit its interior.
      -"You hit execute and slam the cover back down. The Crystal jerks to a stop as the fluid it's releasing hardens just before being expelled, freezing in place. The crystal wavers slightly and then raises a dozen or more legs up in all directions around it. They all begin to glow. It's a bit hard to tell what happens next. The crystal vanishes in a hellstorm of plasma and vaporizing stone, nothing but a cloud of orange molten vapor with crystalline tentacles whipping through it. When it's finished there's a brand new several mile wide smoldering crater of shredded stone with one probably very angry crystal at the bottom. It's begun pouring out more orange stuff and moving forward again as well."
      -"Lucas' plants his feet and the anchoring systems fold out, foot long pneumatic bolts piercing the stone and locking him in place. His chest folds open and the cannon housing begins to expand and snap into position, his entire body transforming to handle the forces about to be put on it. Generators hum to life; capacitors buzz, electrical lines crackle and magnetic fields form. Sections of the cannon begin to rotate and visibly build up power as Lucas calls off the percentages. '60....75....80...96...98...100%! Ready to fire! Give the word!' His voice is distorted and tinny; every non-essential circuit in his body working off what energy it can spare. The recoil of the cannon pushes you several inches back, your pins tearing straight through the stone. The compressed mass of energetic particles screams up toward the crystal. It gets within 100 feet or so before it slams into something unseen. The particles splatter outward, like liquid white phosphorous, spraying across empty space as a thousand falling stars. The barrier, shimmering like hot air and bowed in by the shot, expands back and vanishes. The crystal stops moving and begins to deform. Not a limb, not a protrusion. The entire upper half of it begins to form into an immense crystalline concave dish. The beam that the crystal fires is about 10 feet wide and it throws off enough radiant heat that, even though Miyamoto and Lukas manage to get well away from the beam itself, it still effects them. Effects them like a blowtorch effects butter. To both of them, snug in their robotic shells, there is nothing but a blinding light and then falling; sensors and warning systems screaming until they slam into the ground, half submerged in one of the pools of molten iron several miles away from where they took flight. The crystal is moving again, slowly wandering forward and producing more orange stuff. Oh good, nice to know all that had such a big effect on it. It isn't releasing any energy right now."
   The collosus vaporisd itself when it tried to attack the gravity seep. As stated previously, it responded to everything with overwhelming force.
      -"The giant crystal is well, a giant crystal. A tower of dark blue crystal striding around on dozens of legs like some sort of mutant, new age spider. It's wandering down a canyon, spewing orange stuff into it as it goes. And it's getting dangerously close to that weird crater just ahead of it. The crystal keeps striding forward, until its canyon stops near the gravity well. The creature seems almost confused as it sits there, examining the place where its beam suddenly seemed to cut out, about 50 feet from the crater. It stops producing it's orange fluid and pulls itself up onto the undamaged ground before edging toward the crater. It sticks one foot in and immediately jerks back as the limb cracks and is sucked down to the crater's depths. The crystal's upper portion begins to deform, changing into a concave dish of sorts. There's no one who can see what happens next, save for Vich and his crew, but they don't see much more then a bright light on the horizon. Those deep in the AI core don't feel much; the ground shakes a bit and the emergency lights in the core flicker. Paris, in the freezer, gets buried under microwavable meals and a metal shelf. Gilgamesh and his newly gimped rider find themselves laying face down next to Lucas, bowled over in the dark as the garage seems to jerk a few feet forward and then back. Simus, lost in the dark of the hall, stumbles around for a few second before suddenly finding herself flipping through the air and into a wall. And then the darkened hallway is ablaze with light; a burning hole in the wall illuminating a matching hole in the lab door and a matching chunk taken out of her side. Morul, huddling behind the base, can only watch as the world becomes a tunnel of light; like falling backwards through reentry, or looking upward from the surface of the sun. In the blinding coronal stream, amidst the rumbles, are sharp shivers, things impacting somewhere near by."
      -"You sit up, leaving an outline of black rock where you were laying. The stone glows a dull cherry red with heat and the shields even around back here have bowed forward somewhat, from the force and the heat. You stand up and walk around toward the corner of the base. The entire structure has been rounded; it's corners partially molten and blown smooth. The entire building looks like it partially melted and then blew a foot or so before solidifying again; the metal is discolored by heat and strange formations, like sideways stalactites, mark the direction of the blast. Beyond the building, in the direction of the crater and the crystal, the ground is still visibly hot, more so the further east you go. Craters, some small, some quite large, potmark the terrain randomly. The crystal is gone. Where to, you can't say. The Gravity well seems unchanged, but the area around it is a burnt, melted, potmarked wasteland. The area towards the gravity anomaly, especially very near it, is so hot that you're pretty sure it's rock soup at this point. In other words, for now, you can't get close enough to throw a stone. You can see from here, however, that bits of molten stone are being pulled toward the crater, like embers in the wind, so it must still be active. "

Inspect the damage to the garage door and determine if it's fixable and what it might take. Then get Lukas to help straighten it out so I can get to work.

It's fixable, thats for sure, but it's gonna need a lot of controlled force to straighten it without damaging it further. If you could get Lukas inside this would be easy, but the only way would be to go through this door. You could weld on some handles and let him pull, but they' would need to be extremely robust.

(I love plankton. They're terrestrial aliens; life so broad and differentiated that it makes Humans and hamsters look like first cousins.)

-The ones that maintain the membrane seem to be long, flatworm looking creatures. You can't tell how they're making the membrane, but they're constantly slithering across it and never go very deep into the goo.

-You sit and watch the footage on fast forward. It doesn't take long to see it. It seems like the marks are made by the beetles that you saw around. They seem to eat their way down the tower in erratic spiraling patterns. The patterns look like engraving at first glance only because the patterns have some degree of repetition and follow the spiral track down the tower.
