I noticed that carts fill up with liquid when immersed. This gave me a few ideas:

- Loading Stations
A workshop/building connected to an adjacent stockpike 1 Z-Level above the stop, which rapidly loads cargo into the minecart

- Unloading Stations
A workshop/building connected to an adjacent stockpile 1 Z-Level underneath the stop, which rapidly unloads cargo

One could extend this to include liquid stations as well. Using magma-safe tracks, minecarts and unloaders we could have a whole new way of transporting magma!

Also, you could potentially have specialised 'liquid minecarts' that store liquids, or are sealed so they allow flammable cargo/dwarves to pass through !!FUN!! areas. I can imagine a fortress protected by a lava sea, where the only way in or out is through a kind of 'magma subway system'

If carts fly off their tracks and tumble across the ground, do they spill out their liquid load?

Because then we could fire magma-proof minecarts through a lavafall and out into approaching armies.

The more I read threads like this, the more excited I am about the upcoming release. That's epic.

Thinking about loading and unloading liquids has me thinking about something else, though I could definitely wait a while for it to be incorporated.

Most time that cars/carts need to be loaded with a liquid, they're filled from above from a water tank or something similar.  But why stop with water?  Industries load sand, gravel, coal, etc. in the same way.  So dropping items by pitting should be able to load it into a cart.  Still, it would be convenient for those kinds of items to have a semi-liquid flow, for the sake of realism and to free up our dwarves from emptying bags of sand into minecarts.

But then that would be the same kind of tangent that's given us minecarts in the first place, and I don't want to wait another entire year for an update.  ::)

*EDIT*
To clarify, I think it would be interesting to have conglomerate style items to have liquid physics, or heck, have anything that wouldn't take up an entire tile obey a sort of liquid physics.  So instead of a quantum storage pile, the items that you dump form a pile that grows outwards from the initial designation area and begins to cover the floor...

Basically what my suggestion of a loader/unloader is, just using better imagery.

Sorry, hadn't read the entire thread.  Upon reflection, I think you could easily set up something like this just by using a trapdoor and a pitted dump, with a minecart stop underneath.  The extra details would be up to the builder.  Of course, that depends completely on if falling objects will land inside a minecart or not.  I don't know why it wouldn't but we won't know until the release.

This would be really useful for mining layers, since it would allow for a standard "quantum dump" system, and a quick drop later into an appropriate cart.  Just need to remember to mark the cargo as usable afterwards

quantum-storage minecarts + momentum = Weapons of mass destruction?
