In actual news, the dwarven race was doomed to extinction today as the minecart revolt turned violent.

Those who consider things foolproof often underestimate the ingenuity of fools. 

Those buggers are quite capable of coming up with astounding ways of killing themselves even faster than they can reproduce.

DF is in ALPHA. it's still in development; so it doesn't matter if it has no endgame content yet.

I for one, will welcome our new minecart overlords.

I hate when people say this as a response to everything. It really pisses me off. Of course its still in development. Of course content is being added. Of  course it doesnt matter if there is any official end game content. Of course its still in alpha. Of course we will welcome our minecart overlords.

Stop trolling.

I was thinking more along the lines of this legendary champion, all clad in dented and dinged up steel plate, his blood-drenched axe slung over his back, a notch in the handle for every enemy that saw the swing of that blade as the last sight they ever saw, a battered shield strapped over his arm... and a fluffy, pink stuffed hippo hidden discretely in his breastplate.

The densely knit societal framework that enables the high efficiencies seen in dwarven communes (compared to human societies) is also, paradoxically, the single most likely cause of a communal unit's systemic failure.

Specifically, the phenomenon known as the "tantrum spiral."

These events happen with stark, and sharp intensity as the percentage of population being children increases. This phenomenon can rapidly decimate a thriving metropolitan population, greatly exceeding reproductive and maturation rates.

Apparently dwarves cope with this problem by becoming and accepting migrants.

The next feature that ideally should be added: migration of fortress dwarves to *other* fortresses as a form of strange mood in "skill-less hauler" dwarves.

For all the adversity they bring upon themselves they are equal parts stubborn. Inevitably when an insurmountable siege comes their way the same dwarves of the mind to wall themselves off on the wrong side of the caverns end up being solely responsible for the continued survival of the species.

Despite their inadequacies they’re as difficult to stamp out as cockroaches.

Tell that to the residents of my current fortress.

I tweaked a few world settings to increase volcanism, savagery, and a few other variables, and genned for 1050 years.

Dwarves are nearly extinct.

The fortress has 22 residents. 4 were born on site after disabling the ban on babies in initd.ini

The parent civ shows no leaders in the civ screen. No caravans come, and there are no migrants.

Re-Rail the minecarts!

Perhaps there will be a rope and pully system to power the first push of the carts to set them off?

ie; Power Rail = v
normal rail = -

v--------------
where the power rail pushes the cart and it glides along the other rails until it slows down enough and needs to be powered again.

These can be made out of mechanisms, ropes, blocks etc.

Minecarts will be a welcome addition. They would greatly fascilitate the removal of debris from massive z-level clearings that I find are often necessary on volcano embarks.

As for my doomed fortress of inbred inmates, it is my plan to create a thriving self sustained archology, disable all pop limits, build the population as high as I can, and then use dfusion to switch to adventure mode to avoid destroying the fortress by abandoning.

This should bolster the dwarven population some for another fortress attempt later.
