Stuff railgun carts with a random assortment of high-lethality projectiles like bolts, serated discs, balista bolts and lead/platinum bars.

Single most devastating dwarven contraption yet concieved of. Now, if we combined it with a standard obsidian-casting cave-in gun over a lava pit...

Wonder if he's simply made falling/flying items collide and cause damage or made a minecart "throw" all it's contents on impact. Hope it's the first one :<
If it's the first case, then we could drop anvils from hatches as traps.
It might also make dumping ore down a deep chute to your smelters hazardous to the health of your workers, making minecarts even more useful.

I'm just going to make a bunch of minecart railguns and fill them with mugs.

Goblin 1:
"They've locked the doors again. Now what?"
Goblin 2:
"Sit here and wait. We can always kill their traders."
Goblin 1:
"Can you hear something? Like a fast, wooshing sound behind the rock walls?"
*Mugs begin to rain down upon the goblin horde at terminal velocity!*
Goblins:
WHA-*clonk*

Useful as a way to automatically drop items down a shaft and hit people, or useful as a way to avoid unneeded death?

I'm personally going to abuse the shit out of automatic quantum piles.  Textiles industry is going to go BIG.

Maybe items will flow like liquids. Your treasure room is full of socks dumped in from above. Pull the lever to open the vault door and a tidal wave of socks floods out.

I highly doubt it's possible to do that.. you can't have stockpiles over doors/grates/hatches can you?

I'm surprised nobody made the obligatory cartoon reference to this yet:

The sad thing is dwarves can and will find a way to fuck that up even worse than the master himself.

It would be interesting if the game caused piles of items beyond a certain number of items to spread out to adjacent tiles, potentially causing injury if the movement was large enough. However, it would cause quantum piles to generate lag as the game attempts to smudge them, if the pile is trapped in a small space where the items can't go anywhere. It wouldn't really add anything to the game except players trolling kobolds by putting 5000x gold mugs in a 1x1 closet kept shut by a locked door.

I can't decide if I'd rather load up a cart with a bunch of small, sharp objevts or a lesser amount of relatively heavy things like platinum nuggets. While there's some appeal to the idea of launching heavy furniture such as coffins at invaders (or modding in pianos just for this purpose), I'll probably just compromise with bins full of native platinum blocks. That's probably the best bang for the buck.

If you just want heavy rocks, pick any metal ore (including those which are ores dwarves don't know how to smelt, like cobaltite).  If you want raw weight?  It's time we figure out a good setup for trapping and possibly breeding sperm whales.....

You could have berries on the rocks and the dwarves would say it was "berry gneiss."
You should die horribly for this. And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Time to mod in a Flesh Ball's evil, gigantic cousin: A 'FLESH MOUNTAIN'.

Imagine that. That'd be the end of most forts. The flesh mountain pushes Urist McWeakling in the head, bruising the muscle, tearing the brain and jamming the skull through the brain through the *adamatine helmet*!

Keeping the whales from drowning would be difficult; a cage full of jabberers would be much more effective.
