Are any of the women who play DF, straight?
Yup, I am a girl who is straight and play DF. I've unsuccessfully tried to persuade my boyfriend to try DF. He doesn't really have that much spare time, so it's probably a good thing :P

You are the chosen one!

* The Merchant Of Menace gets her camera.

:P

But that aside, I guess another one was my girlfriend shortly after explaining the basic principals of atomsmashing to me.

She left me to destroy some of her spare stone, and came back to half of her fort being dead. The sound she made is being researched by scientists as possible existence of alien life :P

What? That happens at all?
I imagine it's just a teeeeensy bit one-sided.

Check DFGD, it used to be a monthly thing.

And yeah, just a tad :P

There are subforums other than this one? Huh. I've stayed within its comforting boundaries all this time.

Wow, you weren't kidding. More people identify as "other" than as female. That's hilarious.

non-DF GD tends to be on the more silly side than the gender polls side.

*Me playing DF on my laptop at my friend's place*

Friend: Dude what are you playing?
Me: Dwarf Fortress. It's Sim City with ASCII carnage
Friend: You can't do decent carnage with only ASCII (he's a CoD/BF3 maniac)
Me: Bet ya a case of beer you can.
Friend: Ok you're on.  When's the fun start?

*At this point I'd just gotten my Meat Grinder (1-tile-wide twisting hallway with a gazillion serrated blade traps) finished while the 100-goblin siege waited outside my walls*

Me: Right now.  See this lever? (opens the main gate) And this hallway with the little red arrows? (as the goblins come pouring in)
Friend: YeaaahhhOH MY GOD WHAT HAPPENED? (I'd forgotten to put a roof over the Grinder, so naturally blood and severed limbs start flying out the top and covering the area)
Me: That, my friend is what happens when a goblin explodes.  This little white 2 over here?  That's his head.  And over here a hundred feet away are his shattered legs.
Friend: Dude, get on my computer.  I want this installed and running before I get back with the beer.

And so we welcome another twisted brother into the fold.

Through fits of laughter I explained to a friend how one of the first dwarves I saw go insane was a gemcutter. How she was just cutting gems for me when she finally snapped. In her ensuing rage she choked two warhounds to death. Tore the arm off one dwarf, and if I read the logs right, proceeded to beat him to death with the appendage. Then finally tear one dwarf in half with her bare hands before finally having an axe buried in her skull by my axedwarf captain.

That was the momment I knew I loved this game. I tried to relate that story to a friend and all I could do was laugh.

He just stared and gave a nervous chuckle.

My entire class being horrified when I discussed atomsmashing a family of useless migrants. The looks on their faces were priceless.

Kodkod prefers the fairer sex. Wouldn't have anything to do with the bearded menace.
This is why I say fiancée instead of fiancé. Was it not clear?

Are any of the women who play DF, straight?
Yes.  But I'm a card-carrying geek, so I might not count.   ;)

Friend: Mitch, want to play a game of LoL? We need a 5th guy.

Me: NO I'M TOO DAMN BUSY.

Friend: Doing what? Dwarf Fortress?

Me: THE DEMONS ESCAPED MY ICE TRAP AND NOW MY LAST WARRIOR IS SMACKING THEM ALL DOWN WITH HER DECEASED TODDLER OH GOD THE BOOZE JUST EXPLODED AND THERE'S SMOKE AND FIRE EVERYWHERE JESUS CHRIST.

Friend: That game sounds awesome.

Me: This warrior man, this warrior... She's dropped a baby in a lake, she had to kill the zombie baby, and now she's haunted by its ghost which I cant get rid of. So she goes and makes another one, only to get it set on fire in her hands.

Friend: Why isn't she on fire?

Me: I developed a way to catch demons which shoot web, then I forced it to work in a sweatshop and shoot its magma-proof web at children so I can collect it to make clothes.

Friend: Holy shit.

Me: FLAMING BABY FLAIL'S COMIN' AT YA DEMONS.

A friend of mine asked me what the game was about/like, since she had seen me and another person I had already converted to it playing it. "Imagine the way you play The Sims 3, but with dwarfs in a fantasy world were monsters are trying to kill your bearded sims constantly". I then told her the story of the time I had been attacked by a fire breathing triceratops during a goblin seige. She didn't end up playing it though, because apparently she enjoys having free time. (For the record, the way she plays The Sims 3 is drowning and burning her sims for little to no reason)

Reading this thread makes me think there's a distinct parallel between Dwarf Fortress and The Decemberists.  (For those who don't know the band, imagine if a crazy Renaissance faire aficionado wrote the longest most epic folk-ballads ever.)  I had the same trouble trying to describe The Decemberists to someone who doesn't listen to them:

Me (putting down my iPod):  "You know, I just realized how many songs by the The Decemberists are about, basically, serial killing."
Coworker (looking like he's considering calling HR):   :o
Me:  "No, no it's not like that.  I mean, it's just folk-music-type songs with like, historical settings.  ...And people murdering people.
Coworker:   :o
Me:  "Ah forget it."
