Real men do not wear pants?

You learn something new every day.

Hell, real men can disregard all clothing in general. Because true manliness is having the ability to be completely naked in a room full of people, while simultaneously being the most comfortable person in the entire situation.

Frankly, I find your lack of pants disturbing.

Clothing is comfort, and comfort is paramount!

That's just creepy.

Comfort in nudity is unobtainable when desert sagebrush is involved. No amount of ☼sasquatch legs☼ can protect you from the pointy evils of the desert!

I have no idea who this St. Clement guy is, but clearly he was trying too hard to justify why he was too lazy to not shave or look like less of a hobo.

Prolly a part of the culture wars between early Christians and Romans.  The Roman ideal was clean shaven, so likely there was a group of early Christians that refused to shave just because.

But cleanliness issues causing infections? Their religious customs and ceremonial cleanliness had them bathing MULTIPLE times per day, throwing away dishes that had food go off in them rather than wash and reuse, throwing away clothes and bedclothes from people who had become ill, and a whole host of things. For the ancient world, they were squeeky clean.

Yeah, it looks nutty and crazy to us, but I get the impression that they were scared shitless of disease.  The premodern world didn't have antibiotics, antiviral agents and the like, and many diseases could be a death sentence.  There's also a lack of understanding about how diseases spread.  Leviticus is obsessive and compulsive about its rules, but at least in terms of ritual cleanliness, there's some sound advice about hygene and quarantining the sick.
