Magma smoke killing engravers/miners
« on: April 24, 2012, 02:10:39 pm »

Every time I try to carve fortifications/channel/dig to get magma to power my shops, smoke comes out and the engraver/miner goes missing.
I tried to make it so that the dwarf is standing on an upward stairway as he digs/channels/carves, and I've only had minor success with that. The dwarfs name and description say he's on fire, but he goes around doing his normal job, and dies a while later without any injuries.
Any suggestions?

...That smoke *might* have been your Dwarf's corpse vaporizing.

Also, check his wounds in the health screen/(v) (z)/(u) (v)

Thanks for the responses.
I've tried channeling, if that's what you mean by tapping from above.
I'll have to try and make some wall grates and see if that works

I'm not sure how or why, but I just had a dwarf survive carving a magma fortification. No smoke or anything. Awesome!

I have personally never had a dwarf die from carving a fortification into the side of a magma pipe. Simple make sure that there is a staircase within a few tiles and make sure that the dwarf has something else to do right after they finish carving the fortification, be it hauling something or going off to dig somewhere, and you should be fine.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Nor have I from digging into a pipe through the side. As long as a Dwarf has something to do immediately after it digs/carves whatever to release the magma, it'll get away in time.

The way I usually do it, is to have a ramp exit out of the magma channel, and to carve the slit diagonally into the tube.  Diagonal flow seems to be slower than straight line flow.

This allows the engraver to escape with his beard intact.

As usual, the problem can be solved with the excessive use of doors.

I've yet to have a door save the miner.

I tap diagonals, steps into a diagonal to tap a diagonal that only has magma in 1 diagonal. Diagonal flow is very slow, slow enough for a dwarf to outrun. I do that to get it for my shops.

If you need a fast, free flowing... Flow, do the bridge method mentioned above. Either way, no miner deaths.

Are you using Masterworks?

The grates, they do nothing! If the dwarf does not leave the square in time then the magma appears in his square before falling. This hang-time is enough time to ignite a lazy dwarf.

Ensuring your miners have somewhere else to mine after helps, but does not guarantee survival either.

I've found that having the access tunnel designated as a pond zone is the best. If the dwarf stops burning immediately then there's usually no trouble. If an obsidian plug forms because of the water then you can channel it out safely from above.

Even taking all this into consideration, all fortresses with magmaworks have a field of slabs devoted to miners and engravers who went missing in construction.

Thanks everyone. I think it's because I never had anything for the engraver/miner to do after tapping the magma.
Are you using Masterworks?
Most of the time, yes.
