Vampire sober slowdown
« on: April 22, 2012, 03:03:52 am »

Dude! Was just listening to the new DFTalk, Toady mentioned the crazy slowdown vamps get is from not drinking BLOOD! Last I'd seen here on the forum, the general consensus was it's from them not drinking alcohol...

Has anyone actually done some science to check their work speeds? Like, 2 mason vamps making blocks, one has sacrificial dwarves/animals (since they one guy showed they'll feed off animals) to feed them, one without? See if the one keeps the speed up?

I'd check it, for the fun of it, but I've not seen a vamp since 0.34.05, and I don't know how to make them start showing up again :/

(PS: If Girlinhat recently did a superthread about it, I apologize. I seem to have a knack for asking questions on topics she recently did, and not being able to find them ahead of time:p )

(it's quite possible the alcohol also enters into it -- haven't gotten a chance to go into that, but if they aren't drinking blood, it'll also impact them)

So the best option would be to pit a few fisherdwarf and cheesmaker dwarfs in with them every once in a while?

And since the majority of my historical migrants seem to be in the fishing industry this shouldn't be a problem.

Gotcha, so it could be both, but lack of blood gives them a sober effect too (kinda)?

Hmm... Would the effect compound? Lack of blood AND lack of alcohol make them slower than just lack of one, for instance?

The main problem is that they simply dont drink booze, because of the [NO_DRINK] tag.
So it may be a good idea to make vampires non-alcohol-dependand.

Which should be as simple as adding the following line to the vampire Interaction, in theory

[CE_REMOVE_TAG:ALCOHOL_DEPENDENT:START:0]

Isn't it obvious why both would effect them?  Dwarf blood is 98% booz anyways.

Could you mod dwarf blood to be alcoholic?

This, in my opinion Dwarf Vampire drink alcohol by draining blood of alcoholic dwarfs.

That is to say, all of them

No modding need be done. Why else do you think Elves eat Dorf corpses?

Does the vamp actually drink the blood or does it just auto kill the target dwarf (they cant survive can they?) and reset the vamps speed?
Ie would making dwarf blood alcaholic actually work?

They actually drink the blood, and the target can be saved. So I suppose making Dwarf blood out of alcohol would work.

I don't remember where I read it, but I'm sure I read that removing alcohol dependency and making dwarf blood alcoholic are both solutions that have been successfully implemented. Someone-or-other around here has also done it by making dwarf blood temporarily add back the need to drink as a syndrome. There's a rich variety of options for those who wish to keep their vampires spritely.
