Magma Buildings
« on: July 20, 2007, 09:56:00 pm »

After a good long time setting everything up for my first shot at using the magma flow, I tried to *finally* build my magma smelter and then I discovered that it didn't work!  Why can't you build a magma workshop or furnace over a magma-filled channel?!  Is there any way to get it so that you can build them NOT on the lava river itself?  Maybe some sort of crazy pattern of rooms will do it, but I don't see how.

There's a utility in the wiki that will let you turn magma channels into regular magma flow on which magma buildings can be built.  At the moment I think that's the only way to do it.

That's also a cheat.

The magma furnaces are a huge bonus, so to balance it there needs to be some danger in their use. Thats why its gotta be on the river itself, not a channel.

At least, thats what I think/hope the reasoning is.

There isn't any way as far as I know.

Widen the area touching the magma, and place the smelters/furnaces there. Make sure you trap the area like mad, ugly things come out of that place.

I think it's because Toady hasn't gotten around to coding it.

yeah, its more of an unimplemented feature.  currently, there would be no way to tell the building to stop working if there was not magma in the channel.  the only guaranteed permanent source of magma is in the magma river, so thats where they can be built.

i expect it may be different in the new version, but im not sure.  i think theres something burried in the "future of the fortress" thread about it.

Same goes for water mills. It'd be nice to see other water/magma driven buildings in the fortress. Water driven pumps? Heat rooms for producing compressed steam, that kinda thing.
