Dwarven military

What determines whether a dwarf wants to be a civilian or a soldier? I'm referring to the preferences and thoughts display where dwarves say that they are upset about being relieved from duty or by the draft.

I think this was mentioned in the manual, but since a very quick glance didn't find it:

* If the dwarf has no craft skills, s/he will be irritated by being relieved from duty.

* If the dwarf has no military skills, s/he will be irritated by being drafted.

This is true.  They'll only care about long patrols at that point.  These are good, stable dwarves to have, and drafting some happy workers long enough to get them trained up one skill level in a weapon might be worth it, maybe, so that you have a more flexible army later on.

edit:  of course, unskilled dwarves in melee training sometimes fail to pull their shots...  but you have to start somewhere, and maybe end up with less of you when you get there
