After having a brief conversation with Toady over email, I have found the following information, which may or may not have already been acquired:

1) He believes that the update for minecarts should be out in around a month, providing no unforeseen difficulties or problems.
2) Elves were actually designed to be hated by the player in Fortress mode.

1) Yay! Good to have a ballpark estimate. Even it's totally wrong at least we know that it's not liable to be released any day now. Thank you.

2) Given some of their dialogue throughout various versions of the game, I'm not surprised. Damn beardless hippy cannibals.

Is there any way I could really prove it, without a doubt? I suppose I could take a picture of the email, but there's not actually any way I could prove it from that. Unless Toady himself posts, you'll just have to take my word that what I said is true.

It's never easy to tell. We're not in one of those year-long waits,
but there are various issues I have to work out. Month, maybe?

There are some bug-fixes left to do, and I've also said I'm going to
work on fire AI and a few other issues. After that, I'm not sure. We
have those releases listed on
http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev.html but we're going to mess
with the order a bit.

It depends on what you mean. We're interested in putting more work in
on them, but we also think the player in the fortress should hate
them.

I don't have a problem with that, though the second one was covered in
the various future of the fortresses.
