So my dwarfs are complaining about old clothing. I got a bunch of cloth from a caravan somehow... (Possibly related to why the humans are sieging me right now) so I am about to build a bunch of clothes for the dwarfs.

I'd rather keep it to a minimum so what do they need exactly.

Shirts, pants, and socks I am going to guess? Anything else?

They need their upper body, lower body, and feet covered.

So yeah, those 3 should cover it.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Also another question... What is a good way to get the shirts, pants, and socks to my enclosed vampire? Everytime I let them out they go immediately to feed so I would like a method that involves dropping them in.

channel a hole in the roof of their room and put a 1 tile zone next to the hole and press g to make it a garbage dump. mark the items you want dumped with d-b-d or press k hover the cursor over it and press d. The dwarfs will throw the items into the hole next to the garbage zone. Once down, you need to unforbid it. press d-b-c to mass reclaim.

Does the dump zone have to be on the other side of the hole unreachable, or does it have to be there where the dwarfs can reach it as the items just happen to be dumped down the hole?

I'm a bit confused.

they need to be able to stand on the dump zone and they will toss the items in the hole next to it. If there is no hole next to it, they drop it on the zone tile.

You can use both methods to move massive amounts of items into one single tile.

If you have heard of atomsmashers. Thats when a drawbridge is lowered and every item that gets squished by it is destroyed. You make a draw bridge, link it to a lever, pull it and it will lift up. (Not a retractable bridge that disapears when the lever is pulled, the one that makes a wall is the one you want.) Put a garbage zone is the space where the bridge will lower, dump all your excess stones and pull the lever again and it will all be gone.

Or the garbage chute. Dig a deep deep channel all the way to the magma sea, make an escape staircase if you don't have one. Put a 1 tile garbage zone next to the hole and the dumped items get thrown in, they land in the magma and are destroyed.

Transporting metal ores and flux and wood/coal into the lowest levels, right above the magma sea to supply your steel industry. The items land on a floor instead of magma. Your dwarfs will only have to walk to the drop point instead of the super long round trip down and up 100 flights of stairs. remember to reclaim the materials.

Or what you want, Do the same thing as above, but just selectively dump the things you want transported. drop them into a special room, then unforbid them.

They need their upper body, lower body, and feet covered.
The wiki seems to assert that [LBSTEP:MAX] on robes/dresses won't cover the feet. If that's true, then shoes and a robe should be all a dwarf needs (since the robe covers the rest), right?

I believe that someone over at the modding forums tested this and even with [LBSTEP:MAX] and [UPSTEP:MAX] the dwarves still got bad thoughts. I believe the general consensus has become that you need 3 pieces of clothing. One for the lower body, one for the upper body, and one for the feet.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Well, that sucks. I've been mass-producing Leather Robes for a while, now.

All my dwarves were going to look like brown Shaolin monks.

Give 'em leather robes plus something for their lower body.  Like a loincloth or a thong.  Unfortunately, both are foreign.

Is there anywhere that lists exactly which items of clothing meet each of the requirements?  I've heard items with 'armor' in the name are disqualified, and alos that boots don't count for feet?  Any research done on this area?

my military is fine with high boots. Look in the armor part of the wiki, I think it lists all wearable items and their coverage etc

Oh good, so they can wear high boots with no shoes and not get unhappy thoughts from being barefoot?  The wiki page on armor doesn't seem to comment on the new issue in DF2012 about dwarves getting unhappy thoughts unless qualifying clothing is covering certain areas.

it lists upper body things. except for armor types they cover upper body, same for lower body. boots seem to be an exception
