How do you gain free population?

You click the "increase population" button in a city, I think.

No, that's how you make your cities bigger, and it actually costs you free population. You gain free population by increasing your total population, which you do by stockpiling (current population/2) food.
Food is... pretty important in the very early game. If you want to change your orders in light of this information, go ahead.

I'm actually a bit lost. What does claiming land or increasing the size of your city do? What's the difference between building more cities and expanding your tile count a lot?

EDIT: I think I'm doing better now. The Player button indicates your total and free population, with free population being whatever parts of your population aren't part of the city or working the tiles you've claimed. City population is used to unlock better buildings and nothing else (I think?). I'm still not entirely clear on the purpose of founding new cities, since apparently you need to have claimed the spot to found a new city anyway?

Well, you can recruit troops and stuff in city, and city produce labor and gold. It might be more effcient to have several cities rather than a huge one. P.S. I'll edit my turn as well then.

I was pretty sure food was involved, so I'll stick with my current orders :)

I tried to run the turn, and I really can't. Well, we're waiting for you GM!

I think you have to load each player's turn individually, then hit run turn. That worked for me.

Okay, I tried loading them all at once. Shall we run the turn?

Umm, I think it was Vanigo's intention to run this himself, but he did also say that it should be easy for someone else to GM. So, I'm just gonna do it, and then he can tell me off if he wants to :)

Here is the XML for the next turn

That should be it I think.

I am partially responsible for the last thread dying off. Overall, a few large cities tend to be a better choice than many small ones; the labor and gold gains accelerate as the city's level rises, and large cities allow for infrastructure to be built in 21 surrounding tiles, up two tiles away, sans corners, whereas small cities only cover the 8 directly surrounding tiles. It is also easier to put several buildings, which often unlock new units, in a single city, rather than providing for that building to be present in different cities.

Hang on. I'm not sure what Kashyyk did wrong, but Tarr shouldn't have any new population. Here's the correct turn:
