Wall in the madness
« on: May 11, 2012, 02:33:24 pm »

Hi, so as my first proper fort spins towards inevitable destruction I'm building a wall around it but the progress in building it is VERY slow as it says Masonry required, does that mean they need more stone or just it hasn't been hauled to the location yet? I have blocks and rough stones in the stockpiles.

It means you need Dwarves with the Mason labor turned on.

Two masons aren't many masons.

To build a wall quickly, make everyone into a mason.  Just cancel the jobs at the mason workshop, unless you have assigned it to your real masons or set the skill level higher than Dabbling.

To prevent this in the future, designate [a] square(s) to construct a wall ADJACENT to where the wall will actually be built, then manually SUSPEND construction on just the square where you DON'T want the mason to stand (outside in this case) while NOT SUSPENDING the place where you want the wall actually built.  Hope this makes sense-- I don't want to make an ASCII diagram :)

Construct a wooden ramp next to him to rescue him.  When you deconstruct the wooden ramp, after he has gotten down, the log will automatically be taken back to the wood stockpile.  No clutter!

I turned masonry on for about 30-40 dwarves out of 60 when I was doing my wall, would advise you doing something similar if you are going to encase a large amount of the map.

That should be a new type of project, making a rug design in dwarf fortress (With accurate coloring)

Yeah, two masons will take forever to build even a small-ish wall. Slave peasant labor makes things go considerably faster.
