Burning Dwarfs/Items
« on: March 27, 2008, 09:44:00 pm »

I just had a dragon attack and some items (I dont' really care about them) and some dwarfs (which I do care about) are burning.  The burning dwarfs are dead, but they are still on fire, one of my farmers found out when he tried to take one to his grave.

Well my question is, is there anyway to but the fire out or will they go out by themselves? Will I have to wait until the bodies turn to bone?  My burning farmer made it inside with a burning rotten corpse so the misma and smoke are going to suck if that is the case.

Sorry if this is answered already I tried the wiki but it didn't seem to have an answer and forum search turned up nothing.

Build a down staircase next to some water, build one to get back up, mine out the wall separating the staircase from the water, recruit the dwarf and tell him to get in.

I remember a bug report saying that 'Burning dwarf jumping into water results in steamy death' but that might have been adventure mode.  If your dwarf can handle the steam (I don't know how lethal it is) that could be an option. If he is going to die anyway (if for some reason the fire won't go out) then you aren't losing much even if the bug applies.

Steam was fatal in the 2D version, but like homicidal elephants it was toned down for 3D, so steam no longer kills. Or, at least that's what I've read in these forums.

Um, how do you recruit a dwarf who's already dead? The problem was with fire, smoke and miasma indoors if I understood correctly; not dying dwarves.

Anyway, I believe fire does eventually go out by itself, but it takes a while. If you have enough space, maybe consider constructing a wall around the burning dwarves to contain the smoke and miasma until they rot away, and then remove the wall.

Yah the problem was with already dead dwarfs that were on fire, I thought I put them on forbidden but it seems I missed one so a farmer picked him up to bring him to his tomb, and made it inside then died himself, leaving his own corpse (now burning) and the old corpse still burning and rotten.

I will try the wall building thing.  Then wait until the fire stops.

Thanks for the help.

If possible it might also be a good idea to direct water to the burning room. if possible.

I know that on my recent fort, i dug out my magma metal smithing room over a coal and lignite vein (yeah, i'm lucky. and have magnetite.), and i accidentally left on in the lava channels. That squares now pure obsidian, and the lava goes around it. I'm guessing that fire doesn't consume the lignite? Which, of course, would be reignited once it burns out, in an endless cycle.

Magma is overrated.

After suffering this a few times I started intentionally building a system to flood the area around the fort entrance. Sadly, I have not had it happen since I started this policy. Go figure.
