Yep, same for me.
I use this system for my workshops as well,
One level below the workshop is always a room which has stockpiles of everything the workshop might need (as well as stairs that lead from the workshop to the room). Speeds up the working speed of my craftsdwarves by a great amount.

Firstly I use G Text Monitor to monitor the announcements (by pointing it as the gamelog.txt file) - makes it much easier than pressing A and scrolling through, especially when you've got a lot of dwarves to manage.

Secondly, the biggest step for me was to stop treating this as an RPG type game (ie. 7 dwarves with names, inventory, skills etc) and more like a god-game. So I stopped worrying too much, as long as I periodically check theres enough drink and food available, its all good.

I use the manager function to queue up jobs and get things done now, and if something seems to be taking a while due to skill shortages, I just turn a couple of dwarves labour on to make them do that task.

Overall it runs pretty well!

Most probably already use this, but as the fort gets bigger, I end up using the stocks screen more and more.  Once you set the bookkeeper to high precision the stocks are very accurate.  I flip to it now and then, and monitor food and drink stores.  This is a quick check that you don't have a huge production mishap and incoming famine.

I also like to watch my steel bars and coke stores there to make sure my smelting is going smoothly.

And always useful in a big fort:  <x> is struck down.  Huh? who died and where?  Stocks screen again, check corpses, zoom to it. (its near the end of the screen for me).
