i need a little (as in a lot) more violence in my fort. i have a nice little chasm, but nothing ever comes out. i dump in tons of water to try and stir up some business, but nothing happens. do some chasms have no animals?

Pouring water in only worked in the 2d version. Now all the critters just hang around the area, and don't respawn.

And you won't.

Set up a fortress in a Haunted or Terrifying area and the wildlife should provide you with plenty of action. Try swamps if you can manage it, for the beak dogs and harpies.

or modify the goblins so they siege you instead of sending a bunch of pussy babysnatchers ;-)

I just did, and believe me, i'm having all the action i could want : it's year 3, early spring, i've had three sieges, two of them including troll squads.

And i have 48 dwarves (i limit population to 50 because my computer sucks).

I didn't count, but i'd say i've killed at least 25 goblins and 15 trolls.

The hauling of their clothes is a total pain in the ass, though. I gotta find a way to have goblins attackers wear armors but no clothes.
