Artifact weapon

I have an artifact spear but I can't get a military dwarf to pick it up. Is there anything that makes an artifact weapon unuseable?

It has been reasonably well established that only a hero or champion can use artifact weapons. So, a speardwarf that has 'great' or higher in his weapon should be able to use it, though this may be a tad buggy.

Ive never ever heard that before and I've been hanging around the forum since the 2d version.  Are you really sure this is right?

It's popped up a couple times.  So far, the only dwarves to pick up artifact weapons are champions, so an assumption has been made.
