Oh noez - Where are the trees?
« on: August 09, 2007, 03:13:00 am »

Hey everyone.

I've been playing for a few hours, and am already quite addicted.

Still working on making it past my first winter. I've figured out most things: mason shops, playing with water flow, etc. However, I can't seem to do one of the most basic tasks: Make beds.

I know what I need to do to make the bed, I just can't find a damn tree for the life of me. I figured it was because I started in a bad map, or something. Started a new instance, selecting one of the maps which appeared to be wooded.. Same thing. No trees, not even saplings after a year.

Am I doing something wrong?

Trees are green things in the wilderness left to the fort which look lyke an arrow pointing up, or an intergral symbol..

Try designating an area for woodcutting, and see if any get highlighted, maybe you're not seeing them or something.

No luck. I designated a massive area outside of my fort for tree cutting, and all it found were grasses and willows - neither of which bare wood, right?

I've seen the icons you're speaking of in game before, while watching friends play - I don't seem to be having any luck getting trees.

Made a new world, just for the hell of it.

Sure enough, trees everywhere.

And if you ever play on another treeless map, dig out a tree farm along the side of the underground river and in a few years you'll get some towercap trees to cut down.

I find that just increasing the size of my underground farm to ridiculous proportions fulfills all of my tree needs, as soon as they grow up.  The constant flooding guaruntees that I'll be getting a steady source of Tower-caps in a few years.

That, and I make the river-side bank, just because it looks cool.

willows are indeed trees.  most people consider them to be weeds, but you can chop them down for wood.

it probably wasnt a problem with the world, but your specific site.  different sites have different temperatures and biomes, and thus different trees.

for example, little to no trees on sand dunes or glaciers.

If you prepare for the journey carefully, one of the 3 pages you can access (through tab i think) will tell you a bit about the site you're headed for. Try to choose one with lots of trees.
Otherwise a massive underground treefarm could work too. I tend to do that in a lot of my fortresses too.
