raw fish?
« on: August 09, 2007, 08:32:00 am »

Hmm, I notice there're 2 raw cave fish on stockpiles, but no one would eat them. Many in the fortress are starving and some are starved to death. They are all standing on the food stockpiles now, hunting vermin(hunt vermin on food stockpiles?!)

BTW, I always have fisherdwarves but it always displayed 'Fish none', why? They are not rotten.

You must build a kitchen in order to cook the fish.

Ouch, I edited the post. Yes, I have a kitchen, maybe the cook is hunting vermin for food right now. But I remember they can eat raw food.

Actually...  You have to build a fishery to clean the fish.  Those scales and all those inside bits aren't all that yummy.

No you need a fishery, NOT a kitchen, to proccess it into an edible fish, you need someone to have the fish cleaning/fish disecting abilty on. A good techinique is to get one person to fish and someone else who might not have a job (i.e a peasent or an un-need mason) to prepare them.

Note. The prepare a raw fish doesn't auto like with the tannery or butchers so you either have to queue up alot of orders or put it on repeat. One fishery should easily cover 4 fisherdwarfs.

{Edit: I posted this before I noticed the one above}

Well, I have a fishery. (It is called raw fish, not fish, so it's prepared already.)

Ouch, a fisherdwarf starved to death. Who will be the next?

Sorry to contridict you, but I'm sure the Raw Fish are the ones that haven't been cleaned, yet.  If it just displays as "Fish", then it's edible.

Of course, your dwarves will hobble around looking for vermin to eat until they find something, even if you place their favorite food in front of them.  You're likely to lose quite a few dwarves, from the sounds of things.

Hm, that might be the problem.

Can I ask how many dwarfs you have and what profesion they are?

If your short of food then convert some of your less needed professions can be orded to fish, since it doesn't require any sort of specilist equipment and skills only effect rate of catches and it's not that much.

I have more than 30 dwarves. There are 4 fisherdwarves (5 some minutes ago).
Yeah, they used quite a long time to catch a fish, and before that, they might be already starved.

If your very desperate for food then build a butchry (rembering to enalbe some to have the butcher skill on, migrant farmers usuly will) Then slaughter all the mules that came at the start, and butcher all the horses except 1 male and 2 females (so they can re-populate)

Too bad, one more fisherdwarf and a child are starved to death.

BTW, I killed some dogs one month ago, that didn't help the starving dwarves at all. They are still hunting vermin for food now, until they are starved. It is winter. They just won't go outdoor, but wander around in the fortress.

I think this is one of these occasions where you put the kettle on and just wait for the spring. And hope enough dwarfs survie it.

The situation came too suddenly, because there are too many immigraters in the same year. Now I learn I need more farmers (there are more than 130 seeds left).

You should have alot of farmers if you even hope of surving. My rule is that any new peasnt immigrant is out to work on the feilds. On a non-tundra map (which isn't often) I often have 1/3 of my poulation as farmers, or food production duties (i.e brewing, milling, fishing etc) it just makes sure I never run out of food!

Also don't worry about having all your dwarfs stave to death, thats happened to me so many times, and I know hoe annoying it is,
