Competent farmers can bring you a very steady source of food faster than a bunch of incompetent farmers. When the competent farmers farm, often you will have something like Plump Helmet (6), which is way faster than having an army of lowly qualified farmers harvesting lone Plump Helmets all the time.  :)

Yes, I had a lot of Plump Helmet Spawns(more than 100).
But too many dwarves came that year, and soon winter came...

I'm now training my farmers and slaughtering dogs, hoping they won't die before harvest.

You can always cook the seeds if you're desperate, too.  Just make sure you leave enough to fill your fields.

Hi!

This actually made me wonder; how likely is it for famine to really completely destroy a fortress? As far as I can tell, even under the worst condition, a few dwarves seem to survive on vermin eating and if you succeed to generate a single unit of food, this should give you some breathing space.

So, has anyone actually seen a fortress go down without outside (goblin siege) influence? Or was it always that people abandoned the fortress when I got too ugly?

Just be careful with farming, though. Having too many farm plots can be bad as well if you have 'all dwarves harvest' activated :) :) :)

Well, as the population is decreasing, your need of food is also decreasing.

Hmm, it's 3rd year. 26 dwarves arrived, including 2 nobels. Now I have 57 dwarves, lol
