Performance Question (World size)
« on: May 26, 2008, 03:23:00 am »

Hi,

i have played DF first over a year ago or so (don't remember exactly) but stopped playing, because my PC was too weak to allow anything bigger than a "basic camp" running at a decent speed.
However i have started playing again some days ago, as i learned, that there is a mac-port avaible. As my mace is more powerfull than the old pc, i can play bigger forts at decent speeds.

As the FPS-counter doesn't work properly on the mac-port (always shows 0) i can only guess which settings prevents lags on my system.
I used to play on a medium sized world, with a small embarkment-area (3x3) and temperature and weather turned off. Population capped at 40.
However i switched to pregenerated world which is a pocket-size world.

My question is therefore how big is the influence of world size to overall FPS? The wiki states there IS a influence but as the FPS-counter is broken i can't test myself how big it is. So i'm asking for some guesses from you, as most of you could probably test this yourself.
Would the change from medium size to pocket size world allow me to enable temperature, or could i raise my population cap? If so how much, 50, 60?

On a side note a quick question about magma, as this is the first starting area with magma i play in.
I know i can create obsidian from magma using water, but is this a hardcoded reaction or is this dependant on the temperature-setting? (As the magma cools down) Can i create obsidian from magma even if temperature is turned off?

I don't think it has any influence on ingame FPS at all. I might be able to test it for you tomorrow, if I don't forget about it.

you don't need temperature turned on for making obsidian from water and magma i made it all the time ... for the FPS i can only guess but i think pocket are much more fast then the big standards. but they never have cold climate  :(

If you were on PC, I would recommend using Fraps or another program designed to display your FPS on screen. I'm sure there must be something similar for Mac that would show you your framerate, and help with your tinkering.

World size has some influence on Fortress mode. For instance, the time it takes for your first immigrant wave to arrive is dependant on the distance to the nearest dwarven civilisation.
But I doubt that would have any significant FPS influence.
FPS killers: weather, temperature, loose pets (excessive pathfinding in general). There seems to be a bug also with leaving traders dropping FPS drastically but that I haven't encountered yet.
