Updating and raw files
« on: November 13, 2006, 04:44:00 pm »

I've added some creatures to my raw files (I like dinosaurs). When updating game versions will old raw files work with new versions? Say I make changes to some civs (like give kobolds pants in entity_default.txt), will I have to edit the new files, or can I just copy and paste my old files?

The old files should work.  In the next version, I'm adding some new plants with dye properties, so you might want to at least look at the new file for syntax before you copy over.

I don't think it would take much work to start listing an outline of the changes to the raws (I haven't been officially supporting mods up to this point since I didn't how much of a time sink it would be), so starting with the next version, make sure you read "file_changes.txt" to see if there are going to be any impacts.  People who change their init/interface.txt files should already be reading file_changes.txt to see if they need to add new keyboard commands or init options to their old modified files.

Thanks for the reply!

That was what prompted the question.

Will do, thanks again!

The raw files are only overwritten if they're in the default set. If, like me, you added dinosaurs in a separate file (creature_dinosaur.txt or whatever), they'll be fine because the DF package doesn't contain that file. And, unless the syntax changes markedly, the creatures should be fine as well.
