« on: November 13, 2006, 04:46:00 pm »

1st -- I SINCERELY apologize for asking what has probably been answered more than once before.  THANX in advance for y'all's support!!!

1)  How do you move a SPECIFIC item from a stockpile to another place?

2)  How do you tell the KITCHEN NOT to cook particular items?

3)  How do you slaughter animals?

The SEARCH button is on the TOP RIGHT of the WINDOW

You generally CANNOT move a SPECIFIC item from a stockpile to another place, unless you feel like removing the DESIGNATION of the stockpile under SPECIFIC items. Changing the stockpile optios might ALSO work.

To tell a KITCHEN not to COOK particular items, SIMPLY press Z and choose KITCHEN. Then press C to TOGGLE cooking options.

To slaughter ANIMALS simply press Z and CHOOSE animals. You'll also need a BUTCHER'S shop.

If you remove the DESIGNATION of the SPECIFIC ITEM from the large STOCKPILE and make a one tile STOCKPILE under it, then make a NEW STOCKPILE where you want the item, then q -> take from STOCKPILE and select the one tile space where the SPECIFIC ITEM is.  It's a PAIN, but if you really need to do it, there is a WORKAROUND.

I built 8 beds outside.  How do I move them to a room inside to create a bedroom?

Build (b) will give you a list of things to build.  This includes furniture.  So b -> b, then +/- to the bed you want, enter, select location, and enter.

Damn, I just thought of that, and I thought I was being smart  :(

About the beds, I think he actually placed them outside.  If that's the case, no dwarf likes sleeping in the rain, so use q to view the bed, and x to remove it.  It should go back to the stockpile now.

Come to think of it, can you place beds outside of the fortress?

I don't think you can place beds outside.  Haven't tried it recently, but I think it's part of the no-farming no-trapping outside thing.  I assume s/he has an outside furniture pile.

Yes.  I placed an outside furniture pile and built 8 beds in it.  I intended to move the beds inside when I had excavated a room I wanted to make into a bedroom.  Now I'm wanting to move the beds into the "bedroom."

Now, I'm also COMPLETELY confused!!!  LOL

OK.  I want to make a bedroom / meeting room, etc.  Should I be creating one-tile furniture piles?

THANX for helping!!!  This looks like a GREAT game and I'm anxious to get into it.

To make furniture usable, 'b'uild it.  Once built, you can define a bedroom from a bed by hitting 'q' and putting the cursor over the bed.

Read through the wiki for answers to ALL sorts of questions, basic and advanced.

May I back up the wiki statement?  Props to the authors.  It's totally awesome.  DF is fantastic, but the learning curve is mindblowing.  It gets better really soon, though.  And the in-game manual is extremely helpful, but not terribly well indexed, so it can be hard to find what you need.

OK on the WIKI.  I'll read it in detail.

On this question, I'm hung up on the phrase "place the <item>."  How do I take a bed from my furniture stockpile and created a room with it?

Sorry if this seems dense.  I'm sure it will be a head-slapper when you get me to understand how to move created things around.

Again, THANX very much!!!

And, CHTHON I'm not ignoring your answer.  I'm going to try it and see if that is what I'm trying to do?

okay, i dont think Chthon has the right answer, because i think there are some incorrect assumptions on each side.

from what i understand, you have had a carpenter construct a bed in a workshop, and it got dumped in a furniture pile.  which happens to be outside.

some people have offered directions for moving stuff between stockpiles, but this totally isnt what you want to do.

Actually, Maximus is totally on the money here, but his directions might make too many assumptions about knowledge of the interface.

once you have constructed something like a bed in a workshop, you still have to BUILD it, which means place it in its final location.  you do NOT want to relocate it to a one-square stockpile.

you want to hit the "b" key.  this will bring up the "build" menu.  then you want to build a bed.  it will give you a pick list of your existing-but-not-in-use beds.  you can then place it.  repeat this 8 times.

after you have placed the 8 beds in what will be bedrooms, dwarves will begin sleeping on them.  until this is done, they are just spare furniture and will not be used.

so once you have placed your beds, you can then designate each one as a bedroom.  do this with the "q" key and cursor-over the bed that you want to turn in to a bedroom.  the rest should be appearant, as it will give you a little menu and stuff.

sorry, this is totally repetative of what others have said.  i just figgured it could be a little more pointed.
