Good explanation, puke.  A bit of experimentation is necessary to work out these things; I recommend playing with the menus and scrolling through options, selecting to see what happens, etc.  Just giving yourself ten or fifteen minutes (if that) will really help give you familiarity with what's there.  You'll probably still need to consult the wiki, but it'll help.

One of the things I LOVE about some game communities is the time and patience they take to bring Noobies up to speed.  I am VERY impressed with this community!!!

Certainly did NOT understand that there was a difference between "constructing" an item, and "building" it.  I'll try your suggestions.

THANX!!!

Oh, that reminds me.  Am I supposed to be building ANYTHING outside?!!?

I had assumed that I would build my initial stockpiles and workshops outside WHILE my Miner was tunneling East?

Should I be putting all these structures/stockpiles INSIDE?  Having the Miner pause with tunnenling?

Np, I see now that my answer is not applicable.  In this case you need to open the build menu by hitting 'b' and then choosing bed by hitting 'b'.  This will open a menu listing your beds.  Choose the one you want, then you move the X cursor to the desired location and hit enter if it is yellow, if it is red however, you cannot place it there.

Edit:  You can construct many things outside.  At first this is very helpful, but later on it is not recommended as you do not have the protection of stone around your dwarves.

Oh yeah and since I'm lazy at reading, here is "how" the bed is built after you hit 'B', 'B' and select a location for the bed.

A dwarf with the job "Furniture Hauling" enabled will see the task to place the bed.  He'll go to your furniture stockpile and grab a bed.  Then he'll carry it to the designated location and place it.  After placing it, the job will be complete and the bed will be ready to use.

You can make a bedroom with a placed bed by pressing 'q', going to the bed, and pressing 'r'.  You can set the bounds of the room, make sure your room is closed off by a door.  Doors are built much like beds.
