Re: Necromunda: WH40K Skirmish Game
« Reply #15 on: May 16, 2012, 06:50:01 pm »

Can't see there being any problem with a thread title change, it's your thread after all. Probably better to change it to "Games Workshop Specialist Games" to differentiate it from WH/WH40k threads.

I guess Mordheim is a bit funny with combat. There's a strange disparity in costs of models and the equipment lists for some races. Two weapons are the norm, with two daggers being extremely cost effective. Spears are nice as well, just for the first strike taking away half the strategy of even getting the charge vs any other models. Then there's those horrible races like Skaven. They're a core race with cheap troops, heaps of heroes for exploration and cheap slings. So many slings!

So, yeah, it's weird that Mordheim feels more balanced than Necromunda, but it actually probably isn't. Or is just horribly unbalanced in other ways.

If you want to try another little skirmish game, there's the Warbands series for WH, as well as the Path to Glory one for Chaos warbands. Should be a free download on the GW site somewhere (or they used to be). There's two versions of Warbands, the more recent is probably slightly better. They're fun, with different rules for mini units and can handle a campaign a bit. Again, unfortunately, unbalanced, but this time it's more due to the absolutely huge amount of units available across all the WH Army books and the fact that many troop types weren't designed with mini-unit or single combat in mind. That and magic. It scales SO poorly at low/mid levels (or actually, some races can scale amazingly, everyone else sucks hairies). Actually, those two things and the fact that missile fire is way too strong. Oh, and some of the general's abilities are amazing whilst some are pretty useless. Other than that, they're quite fun little games. Path to glory is like this, but you don't really know what troops you'll get. Whether this is a good thing is a point of conjecture. At least you can't take 100 N.goblin bowmen on purpose.

Anyone interested in getting B12 campaign going for Battlefleet Gothic, Inquisitor, Mordheim, or some other Games Workshop game that we can get to work online?

I wouldn't mind BFG. Played with the Vassal mod a few times already, it's quite fun.

Indeed, any preference for a specific fleet? I really like the Imperial fleet with a frigate/bomber heavy build

I've only ever played about 10 games of BFG over the years. The rules are great (I played my first games when they were released in WD as a test project). I'd love to give it a go on vassal at some time. I'll have to familiarize my self with vassal's interface these days, but it sounds like fun.

I'd have a crack at Eldar or Space Marines if we get enough people involved. Or chaos. Actually, there's no real reason to not have multiples of the same race, even letting people have a couple of fleets if we end up with low player numbers.

Is there a PDF or something that lists upgrades available to ships of differing factions, anyone know where one is if one does exist?

It's most certainly not in a torrent file. Not one that could be found with a quick google search.

I'm not condoning that, but it can be a bit of a bugger to get ALL of the BFG stuff that's been put out over the years. Extra races, upgrades and stuff. The information can be pretty hard to digest in the little mini-fleet files or even in the main rules themselves. All the information probably is in all those .pdf files on the GW website, but it's so broken up and spread around the different files that it's nice to have it all in one or two books until you get used to it all. Or one big torrent folder. Whatever suits you,

I favour Imperials as well, although I like them for the Armoured Prow and ridiculous gunlines.

Adwarf, going by the Segmentum Solar list you can't take Vengeances, or going by the Segmentum Obscurus list you can't take Oberons and Falchions. You also need 2 Cruisers/Light Cruisers for every Grand Cruiser, and 3 Battle/Cruiser/Light Cruisers for each Battleship, Grand Cruisers don't count for BBs.

Are Exorcist Class Grand Cruisers allowed in Segmentum Solar's list? In other words reworking my forces now.

Page 27/28 (By the numbers in the corner, not pages of the PDF) of the Imperial Fleets PDF gives the Solar and Obscurus lists.

Obscurus can have Oberons, due to the rules on P29, but Obscurus also has reliability problems and ships have a chance of turning to Chaos in the middle of battle.
