Many large and livestock type animals (cows, horses, giraffes) need to be pastured in a grassy area in order to feed themselves. Poltry and other animals such as pigs and dogs do not need to graze to survive.

I came to this thread hoping it was about dumping dye on pets to make blue puppies and green kittens.

Strictly speaking any animal which is a "Stray" something is not a pet.  Dwarves will feed their pets, either really or in concept (I'm not personally certain which), but no one feeds strays.  Stray grazing animals need to be pastured to avoid starvation.

EIther that or the animals had no access to the outside or caverns. usually when they get hungry they'll saunter on out anfd feed themselves before going back to the meeting hall. Dwarves will in fact feed thier own pets of they get hungry. This is going to sound odd, but i do occasionally have grazers instead go into the food stocks and eat plants out of there instead.

The only problem I hae with grazers are the absurd graze index values.

That, and that all herbivores are grazers, when obviously some are browsers (deer, draltha, etc.)

Well. Except pandas. They are grazers that only eat arrow bamboo. *only* arrow bamboo.

The amount of pasturage for a herd of animals (even with "efficient and sustainable" individual pens) is just too high.

Quite right. Dieing is when you stuff the adorable horrors into special metal forms so that they develop 6, 12, or even 20 sides that you can paint numbers on later.

Use goats, in vanilla they eat less grass than a cow, but they give just as much milk.

There's a reason alot of players opt to mod out grazing in general you know...
