!!SCIENCE!!: Coma
« on: May 19, 2012, 02:36:16 pm »

I have been playing for a while, and I was messing around with as Bronze Colossus and I bunch someone in the head, shattering his skull. He was unconscious for quite a while ( I came back after finish off the rest of the hamlet), and he seemed to have awoke, ran off about 5 tiles, then passes out again. Unfortunately, do to some amputations, he eventually bled out.

But it makes me wonder, is it possible in DF for people to go into some sort of pseudo-coma like with this guy?

Certainly possible. Serious damage to the body can cause people to go into the unconscious state for extended periods of time, though for ones that last long periods often the wounded will eventually die rather then eventually healing enough to remain in the awake state.

Another way for things to go into a coma state is if they get hit with a syndrome that forces them to go unconscious. This could then either end after a period of time or not at all, depending on the decisions of the RNG.

It's very possible that Toady has implemented brain damage mechanics.

Wow.

Wow.
Now we just need different parts of the brain.

You have started to tantrum!

The frontal lobe is responsible for that, right?

Didn't someone make a thread about how a modded super character (normal toughness and pain threshold though) they made fell and landed on his head, which broke his spine and damaged the brain, also made him invincible for a time?

No, it really isn't. It's hard to cause brain damage in one without killing them, as concussions in DF have no treatment - and as such, are pretty damn lethal. So we can't actually observe if DF treats this with a black or white situation where surviving a head injury increments penalties, or if it treats it as "if it isn't broken, it isn't dead, and it's just a flesh wound" kind of situation.

Wow.

If a creature has multiple [THOUGHT] parts, getting one damaged will put them into a coma.

So yes.

So if I modded every creature to have a Left brain, Right brain, and brain stem, with [THOUGHT] on both the right and left, and [NERVOUS] on the brain stem....

Actually, having his upper spine shattered by zombie yaks temporarily gave him NO_PAIN, as well as the ability to move using only his face.

Really? AFAIK some hydras kept moving (running away) even after I caved one of its heads in.

It sounds like you caused such severe pain that he just kept passing out. It's sort of like a coma except about a thousand times more horrible. Eventually it subsides.

No, I mean if it has only one head with 3 thought parts inside, they tend to go unconscious the instant one is hurt--it doesn't say they give in to pain, either.

Yep, 3-part brain is in TomiTapio's edition of Genesis 3.
