Does anybody know what settings I'd need to change to go from 'wired straight into PC mode' to 'wired into router w/wireless & wired connections mode'?

Shouldn't need to do very much, they're mostly designed to be plug and play. An aggressive security policy on the router may cause it to reject a lot of connections, incoming and outgoing.

Not meaning to be rude, but google "setting up router" and the device manufacturer, because it's going to differ slightly with each router manufacturer's software. Those pages will give you far more concise steps than a general guide to fooling with your router.

The router is long since set up; I'm suspecting it's the modem that the problem; unless, of course the answer is the same, just with the word 'modem' substituted for 'router'.

Got mine all set up in office with laptop and soon desktop. :) Thank you all so much. Leaving thread open seeing as I imagine there will be other people who have wireless issues in the future.

Cable modems will hand out a single IP to a single device. If you had it plugged into a pc, and then plug it into your router without turning it off in between, it will probably just ignore you.

So just turning the modem off while I replug everything ought to make it work?

I have no idea how I managed to not try that.

Setting up your own wireless network gives you more power and management. Security is vital to anyone who is using the internet. You have more control in having your own wireless network. Sharing connection with others is not a good idea since there are people out there who have bad motives.
