List Filtering
« on: May 26, 2012, 03:17:37 pm »

You know how you can filter/search for specific items on the "(j) Job List > (m) Manager > (q) New Order" screen just by typing them out?  Similarly you can do this from the embark preparations screen and the trade hauling screen.

I think you should be able to do this from these screens as well:
1. (p) Stockpiles > (t) Custom Stockpile Settings
2. (z) Status > Stocks
3. (j) Job List
4. (u) Unit List
5. (r) Reports
6. (a) View Announcements

Also, when viewed, every item should list its stockpile type.

I'll second this strongly.

The (s)earch item from the bring-to-trade menu is awesome.

There are plenty of -more- places though.

(R)ooms.
The 'pick a new squadmate for this slot' portion of the military screen.

Seems sensible. After all, Toady seems to be taking a quick feature break to fiddle with the interface, which has included at least one other searching-based thing (in the arena).

YES. YES. YES!

This is good news, interface tweaks are always welcome.

This suggestion work very well combined with "Sort everything, everywhere, as many ways as possible, starting with alphabetical.".

One other tweak to 'list filtering' would be: I'd like to be able to -ex-clude things.

Use "!" or "-" as excluders.

Searching for "x", but I don't want the 10,000 status of Urist McBoataxe.
So:
!McBoataxe x

or:
-McBoataxe x

(Hell, I'd be happy with the entire regexp circus slammed right into here. It would still make the learning curve/usability easier - and that's actually saying a whole lot. :)

Definitely a compounded "Yes: this, but No: not that" would shortcut the whole "All rings, but no earrings"-type issue with Trading.  (Currently, search for "rings", and either pick and choose carefully or select all/sloppily, then search for "earrings" and undo any of the latter that you've ended up selecting.)

((But as most of the trading issues I have is that I have them almost completely en-binned (thankfully in stockpiles for single-types, usually, so a bin has just one item-type), but need to peek into each bin to check that I want to deliver them to the Trade Depot.))

Well, /if/ you can use Regexps? ;)  I can, but I'd like to see if there's any way of speed-typing (or selecting to insert, by a hotkey option) the various less easily typed quality-modifiers and <</>> markers.  So that all "slightly damaged masterwork sock of one plant-fibre or anothers, improved at least professionally so, that are on fire" can be more easily found. ;)

Anyway, oft-suggested this.  Have we had Footkerchief along yet?  Apparently not...

This is one thing that is def missing and i'd love. Also having it search for example inside barrels for when the trader arrives and i want to get rid of all large/small clothing without searching every barrel.

Yes. Searching for things that are on fire is rather important here too. :D

For consistency, it's probably wise to take the best solutions from every selection screen, make the best possible selection tool/process, and invoke it whenever something or someone needs to be selected, be it a trade good, piece of furniture, building material, piece of equipment, etc. for items or a room owner, noble, soldier, recruit, hauler, working dwarf, trader, etc. for creatures. A sensible standard filter specific for all these instances is of course to be applied, but otherwise we'd have the same search capability, and importantly, the same search method and interface whenever we're searching for something or someone.

My annoyance with stockpile management has grown tenfold since I started playing Masterwork with all the extra plants and stuff. I cannot for the life of me find something as simple as "plump helmet seeds" for a small stockpile near the farm patch.

Toady, I would take it in kind if you would throw in an update with alphabetical stockpile lists or a search function. Screw the bugs that need fixing.

I think this was mentioned at least a couple of times. It won't hurt to express my approval though.
