Deanimation of undeads
« on: May 28, 2012, 05:55:16 am »

I find it strange how necromancers can animate corpses, but not deanimate them again. I mean, i understand if you were some random Urist McDoe finding some populist magic newsletter in a tower, they wouldnt really know more than maybe just getting a corpse to twitch. But that big shot 200+ year old zombie master should be able to deanimate his minions, absorbing the evil. I would find that very useful in adventure mode when you want to visit a civilised area and you dont feel like abandoning your zombie army or having it wipe out that village you were going to shop and sleep in. Even more useful would be that if you absorbed enough magic to say, power a skeletal whale or elephant, you would heal, even more and you would start getting werewolf esque mutations, like extra limbs or parts of your body rotting away.

Even more cool would be visitting a temple to "become a priest", you know, atleast in brittish history, catholic priests doubled as vampire hunters. The high priest could teach you the ways of deanimating, send you on quests to purge evil places of their evil, like a tower or a tomb or something.

I know it sounds overpowered, but maybe if it only worked on weak and DIY undeads?

It would be neat so you can have civilized discussion with non undead without having your minions try to eat their brains.

I'd like a 'death to the undead' spell. It would be useful against those perpetually reanimating zombies in evil regions.

Nah. That would give problems in worldgen (much less reanimatable zombies), and ruin the classic theme of an old and abandonned graveyard as a spawning place for  zombies. When necromancers and their zombies become procedurally generated, having this as one of the traits might be good.

Basically, necromancers can go to their 'f'ollowers screen and choose to de-animate their corpses?
Seems sensible. Until that's implemented, smack your zombies a few times with a good, sturdy stick.

So wait... Do  you propose traitorous necromancers that un-revive their zombies, or holy knights that parade the country cleansing it of the undead? Either one would be fitting...

I think clergy in general would be a good idea. Add in a "Sanctification" labor or what-have-you, and dwarves with appropriate personalities could become priests. Then add in a "bless ground" designation, like smoothing stone, but it creates holy ground that undead creatures have a hard time walking on and have a chance to de-summon on when they do. Designating a statue or piece of furniture or whatever will turn it into a "sacred diorite statue of Urist McHolyPants" or whatever, and will make holy ground around it more effective.

Some. Sometimes these were specialties that requires special training. (One reason is because often Exorcisms were caused by real phenomina. Like poisoned water wells)

Given that vampires are real and not just a urban legend like real life vampires were... I'd outright expect a Vampire Slaying Priest to be a specialist and not just some priest you pick up at the local temple. Especially since it isn't like priests have any sort of special magic power that aids them... or at least not guarenteed.

It would be like hiring a doctor to fight virus zombies with guns instead of a soldier.
