My military commander got trapped in a cage while fighting a thief

Build it, unassign him. Or build it and connect to a lever. First method may be faster, but it doesn't hurt to do both.

Why did he get caged in the first place?

I already tried to unasign him but it didn't work. Then i built the cage and a lever. Now he is injured in leg but no one will take him to hospital, they are having a break instead. He is also starving and dehydrating. I already built him a tomb. Now we'll just wait until he dies to his own vomit.

If a creature loses consciousness on a trap tile, the trap will trigger, even if the creature would not normally trigger the trap.  Same goes for creatures that stumble into a spider web on a trap tile.
