Cavern layer number and spoilers
« on: June 14, 2012, 03:01:30 pm »

So I like single-cavern worlds, but I've been trying to find an HFS structure on one, without success.  I eventually did two embarks on the same region tile, occupying first the east half and then the west half of the local map.  Using reveal, I was able to confirm that there are no HFS structures in that entire region tile, even though there's supposed to be exactly one.

So do HFS structures require 3 caverns or what?

Yes, three or more.

Err, no. They require 'Bottom layer (forces magma): YES' in advanced worldgen.

I have searched for HFS structures in a similar way with one cavern layer and found none.

Err, no. They require 'Bottom layer (forces magma): YES' in advanced worldgen.

Then why, when using only one cavern layer, have I not found a region tile that contains one yet?  I've never turned that option off.

Copy and paste the worldgen file.  There are two settings for Magma.

Magma
Force Magma on Bottom

I'm curious about this aswell; I decided to give a try with two caverns, instead of three.  Don't wanna miss the magma, however.

Here it is.

Only cavern related settings that I changed were openness, passage density, layers above, and number.  Magma sea and circus are enabled and generated, along with the candy tubes, which according to the wiki imply that the clown cars should also show up, but they don't.

Searching in old threads suggests that other people who use less than 3 cavern layers never find them either.

Damn.  My favorite way of building forts is to build them between the cavern and the magma sea, and with multiple caverns that's usually 90 levels down instead of 30.  Wonder if this is a bug or intentional.

Not sure, if its a bug.  But if progression of difficulty increased with lower caverns, and then finally hell, that might be why, the progression can't skip something.  Isn't there a wood in cavern 3, immune to magma?  Might need that to fight hell stuff, but dunno.  Good luck with SCIENCE.  Thank you posting this, I restarted, with 3, after reading your informative thread.  Take care, Knutor

Nether caps are a cavern-3 "tree" that maintains a constant temperature somewhere between freezing and normal room temperature, even when submerged in magma.  Along with all other flora and fauna of the deep caverns, it will still appear in cavern 1 or 2 if that's the deepest cavern layer.

So sometimes I'll see the magma sea open up to the lowest cavern layer in a pool like area. But I've only seen that on the third cavern. I wonder if there is something inherent about the third cavern that allows it to connect to things.

I only run single or double cavern worlds now cause digging 100+ levels is a long way to go. And magma forges are overrated.

Personally, I like magma forges. I don't find a lot of coal, and prefer to use wood for things like beds and bins and stuff.

I've found Toadys new multilevel dig painting in v34, to improve my cave designs.  I particularly enjoy painting burrows across multiple levels.  Prior to v34, I would have agreed with you darkrider2, that 100+ digs were a ton of clicks.  Sincerely, Knutor

Yeah, Toady added it a while ago. It's fantastic, and it works just like you'd think it would.
