I don't have the raws in front of me, but I really doubt vanilla dwarves would practice dwarven (or other sentient) sacrifice; outside of fel moods.
Dwarfs don't do torturing or slavery or butchering sentients I know for sure; but I'm pretty sure here's nothing about sacrifices. Sure they wouldn't be proud of it, and it might give them a bad thought, but they had to do what must be done and it's not like he's death isn't he. He's still living in that machine, right...

I checked the raws. Nothing about sacrifices, but there's some stuff about making throphies out of kills and just killing anyone. But nothing about sacrifices.

It seems to me that not many people object to the idea of being able to create a bronze colossus, it's just the exact mechanics of how to do so without utterly breaking the game balance that makes it tricky.  Either making it the equivalent of a megaproject, or making it an extremely rare 'mood' with very difficult material requirements seems appropriate.

I for one object to the idea. It just doesn't feel right that dwarves would be able to create a bronze colossus. That would just cheapen the whole concept of it as a huge mysterious living statue that'll stomp you to death for reasons unknown. The easy and logical way out that'd most likely please everyone and be easier to explain is to add golem construction. These could come in all manners of shapes, sizes and materials adding for a more creative feature. If wish you could even make a huge bronze war golem that'd be roughly equivalent of a bronze colossus albeit smaller and less powerful, but still a force to be reckoned with ^^

This is another instance where I'd love to see Toady explore and implement a more sophisticated simulation of knowledge spread, discovery, and abstract knowledge.

It would be cool to have the ability to build such things being contingent upon a fort having people with the right knowledge and training.  And when I say right knowledge and training, I mean ridiculously esoteric stuff; like with regard to this thread, think about wizards spending their entire careers adventuring across the world looking for and studying the forbidden and secret knowledge needed for constructing a colossus.  And master metalworkers and engineers that understand and have what it takes to make the structural and mechanical components of the colossus, having spent their lives refining and guarding the secrets of their craft...   Only when such a sage and master craftworkers armed with these secrets bless your fort with their presence, and the fort has the right material resources could such a powerful and rare construct be even attempted to be made.

Indeed. Secrets spreading around would be a great feature to have, whether it's dwarves learning necromancy in Fortress Mode or discovering how to make massive, animate statues.
