Bin allocation
« on: June 15, 2012, 08:56:38 pm »

What is the mechanics of bin allocation to stockpiles? Does it follow a "first in last out" allocation where newer stockpiles get assigned bins first, or does it follow a "first in first out" allocation where older stockpiles get assigned bins first?

I'm not completely certain of this at all, but I think it's oldest stockpile gets first dibs.

this. If I have less than 10 empty bins I need to make more!

Yup.

"Moar bin" used to be "use up all that useless lead" but unfortunately, metal bins are pretty damn heavy, and slow dorfs down a lot.  And they don't always use the wheelbarrows with bins either.  Still, cloth and leather supplies from the traders always adds to my fort bin supply, and they're always wood.

Also, stockpiles don't get another bin unless all the bins on the stockpile are currently full.  The capacities of bins have been twaeked, so I don't know all the numbers.  I do know that bins store a maximum of 5 bars and blocks though instead of the old 10.

That is an insane and dangerous plan.  I approve wholeheartedly.

Ah I see. Yes, I've been using the "moar bin" policy, but I wanted to know whether bins get allocated in a completely random manner, or in a specific manner, so that I can maximise bin usage in all my current stockpiles.
