Which therapist do you use?
« on: June 17, 2012, 05:21:53 am »

Just wondering how other people manage dwarf labor setting. Do you use a utility?  Are you too hardcore for this? Are there other cool ways of keeping track of your dwarf labours not currently reported on the wiki?

I used to use the standard one, but lately I play with a pop_cap of zero so I don't use it any more.

I've never used therapist before, and never plan on using it. What does that make me?

I don't use therapist. In fact, I have never used therapist. Managing dwarf settings involves checking and setting migrants as they arrive, and occasionally going through the units screen to check what the dwarves are up to. You can also check the settings on dwarves idling in meeting zones, and set the dwarf titles to give an idea of what they do.

I dont use therapist either.
I have no reason to because I can manage any dwarf by turning the labor I need on really quick. Then finding him later to turn it off.

I'm a strong independent DF player who don't need no dwarf the rapist.
I used to use one when I started though.

No. Why would I wear a shirt? I pay for central heating and by god damn I will use it.

I've never seen the need to use any utility to manage my insane little bastards. I set the labors that need to be set, and things get done.
Using outside utilities feels like easymode at best and cheating at worst. But that's just my opinion, man.

Mh, i use it.
May seem like cheating to some, but spending 30 minutes turning labors on and off is no fun.

I don't always use it, but it's useful more mid game labor reassignments.

I only find I need Therapist in very small forts with very distinct division of labor. In larger forts, there's so much redundancy because I give every dwarf several primary and secondary jobs, and I leave Hauling enabled on everyone as well. Currently running a 68-dwarf fortress and things have been running smoothly for 8 years.

I actually use the Workshop Profiles to help skill up dwarves by making it so Legendary Dwarves can't work at the Mason's workshop anymore, etc. I make so many rock blocks that this eventually turns all masons legendary

This.  It's not cheating- it's adding a basic interface so the game is just more playable.

I use Autolabor because I'm lazy.

I use the clone for its extra functionality. Not sure how much its roles ratings gel with the game's idea of what make a dwarf good for a job (Agility is still a majorly important stat*), but when I have a bunch of unremarkable migrants and a bunch of skilled roles that need filling it'll read the same stats that the game does when deciding quality.

*Though I have been making the uselessly clumsy dwarves engravers in the hope that their terrible speed will cause them to stay on each smoothing job long enough to rack up the stat gains.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Been using the clone to see how good dwarves at certain tasks and assign them to labors based on aptitude.  I've also found the animals tab to be useful for managing large numbers of livestock, since it displays the age of the animal, and I can find and butcher the oldest animals.
