I actually wonder if this means there will come a point where the game will suddenly rush into completion.  Toady is doing such a good job of adding refined systems and rewriting things now rather than later, I wonder if the underlying structure will be mostly finished after a few years (or a decade), and there will come a point where it's just adding new items onto the already built base.

Dare I dream of a world where DF gets exciting new, content and gameplay rich updates every couple months?  Or even a finished DF earlier than twenty or more years from now?

Ah, Corai, you must be new here.

In the year and a bit that I've been here, I've already seen DF roll from the very end of 40d to 0.31.x to DF2012. :D

The amount of progress in that time has been MASSIVE.

40d was obsolete about 2 years ago. But developement has certainly livened up.

I actually can't wait for Toady to implement religion wars so he can tell us he has put in "some sort of Spanish inquisition thing-y" and we can all answer that none of us expected it.

But dosen't that mean you are expecting it?

I wouldn't be surprised if we got a release at the end of this month or early next month. Depending on how much Toady focuses on getting the major stuff done, we might have a version out. Feature creep has gone into this already - we're probably going to have many attack options, including "pin goblin to wall with sword, apply hammer liberally across head".

On that note, I'm expecting to see mounted military in Dwarf Fortress mode in this next release. Which may take a while.

I always thought of dwarves as incapable of riding things. I don't think any animal will allow it anyway. I think their must be a tag in dwarves file, thats says [OPPOSED_TO_NATURE], and nature has a [OPPOSED_TO_DWARVES].

I hope he focuses a little on the damn speed/attack thing. I've started getting into adventure mode, and It is mind-bendingly annoying that speed is tied to attacking. Especially if I'm carrying something, or a lot of things; If i'm ambushed, I have to throw my items at them in a desperate attempt to regain cambat effectiveness.

- Apart from pulling the trigger to fire... NOTHING is similar about it.
- I'll admit to never having fired a gun.
If we could miniaturize things, we would have everybody wielding drawbridges and utterly atomizing

Those are humans.
Humans already ride bears.
Dwarves are bearded psychopaths.
Psychopaths don't ride things.
Until Toady adds in the ability to ride your opponent in battle.

Right now you can just 'r'emove your backpack and drop it (or throw the whole thing at them.)
