are you limited to a certain region of the map in adventure mode? might seem like a stupid question but if you are NOT then 3 different civilizations i played were right on the edge of the map... and i died before trying the other directions..

so just wondering... i mean it could be that the whole map is just to large to process while playing.

You can start in any of the human civilizations -- if you go into Legends, you can offload a BMP if you want, and look at that to try and orient yourself.  It may be that three of the human civs are close together.  That isn't uncommon.
