A few new commands for squads!

One important command would be "Hold Position", to keep dwarves from attacking enemies on sight. Not as advanced as formations, but would definitely make organizing defenses more efficient.

This. Definitely this.
A 'defend' command, possibly using a similar method to zoning stockpiles or whatever, so that units assigned to defence will attack anything hostile that enters that area, but will not leave it themselves until you rescind the command.
Which means getting shot to death by enemy marksmen and so forth, but that's part of the Fun.
knutor:
We used to have this. Defend Burrow. Just had to paint the burrow and issue the order each month via scheduling. But no longer, do they Defend Burrows from within their burrow, [34.07] did, [34.11] ignores burrows boundaries. It is strange, the way they behave. Before I had them all stationed really nice like, now they take off like lunatics.
Blade Master Model 42:
I like all of these suggestions. Ways to keep my bearded idiots from bleeding out into the river are always welcome, as far as I'm concerned, and apprehending enemies is always fun, even if not easy. I wonder, could you ransom a Goblin general for peace in the future?
loose nut:
Hi - I suggested the "escort" command in this thread from a year ago, along with some other things I thought followed from that ability. Rescue and Arrest also seem like things for a squad to do, although I agree they could be combined ("Capture"?)
GreatWyrmGold:
Well, since Rescue and arrest are intended to be two completely different things, and you might want to unlawfully arrest some dwarf...probably best if they're separate, so that your dwarves don't accidently rescue the goblin general.
On the topic of prisoners, having a prison "zone" instead of the current rooms could be neat. Prisoners might be tied up to chains or put in cages if they were present, else they wouldjust be dropped into the zone. This could create the possibility of neat, barred-cell jails with beads and wells and stuff, although it would allow us to make "jails" that drop the prisoners into the caverns after the warden leaves.
